Excellent food, but very expensive. A very unique variety of dishes with fresh and unique tastes. Our group ordered a wide assortment of different dishes, and there was nothing that we didn’t enjoy. The service was also very good, and also fast. We let them know what time we had to leave by, and they ensured that we were out right on time!
Nola! Where have you been all my life?! First experience at Nola’s on a busy Saturday evening. Pacific Northwest cuisine. Shared plate concept with idea of ordering 2-3 dishes per person . Every dish we ordered 3/4 of the menu was a hit; unique combination of flavours will have you saying “oh my god, try this”. That said, I didn’t want to share my Haloumi Waldorf salad or gun powdered carrots. Sharing is caring but sometimes it’s all about me, so get your own dish Good selection for the vegetarians. Recommend making a reservation can through website on line for prime time weekends. I unfortunately did not get to try desert as I was fully satiated. I will be back!! It is a must try with a guarantee you will not be disappointed. The cocktails were also on point.
I don't live in Winnipeg anymore and when I visit, I live to try restaurants I haven't visited before. Had a great experience at Nola. There were two of us, and we shared 4 plates. The dishes were served family style. The corn fritters and the Japanese karaage fried chicken were my favorite. Everything was excellent and very well presented. The staff explained each dish as it was served. This is not the place to go for comfort food, but definitely recommend for a new, fresh, interesting, and eclectic taste.
Among the top restaurants in Winnipeg. With strong contenders like Ox Bow and Close Company in the city, I was very excited to see a new kid on the block for an amazing dining experience. It did not disappoint. Fantastic menu, service, and meal. Will be back for sure.
Absolutely incredible! Accommodated my celiac disease very very well. Staff is incredibly friendly and Chef Emily Butcher is so talented. No doubt, best restaurant in Winnipeg!
I love Nola! Everything we ordered we're sooo good! The dishes are all meant sharing. I recommend 2 dishes per person. Their cocktails were also really good!Food: 5/5
I went to Nola for the first time with my girlfriend last night for our anniversary. The waitress advised us it was a sharing style restaurant and recommended ordering 4 dishes for 2 people. I am someone with a bigger appetite, so if youre like me, I would advise having a bigger lunch earlier in the day if youre going for dinner. The portions are on the smaller side, so unless you plan on ordering quite a few dishes, dont expect to feel stuffed at the end. I felt content at the end with 4 dishes, but definitely couldve eaten more. However my girlfriend was full after the 4. The food itself was all very good. We started off with the beef tartar, which didnt blow my mind or anything, but it was a nice tartar with a good dill flavour. The wonton crisps were very nice. The gunpowder carrots were delicious. It had very good sauces, and the candied pumpkin seeds were my favourite part. Our next dish was the gnocchi. We both loved these as well, and it was one of the heavier dishes. The scallops were our last dish, and this was probably our favourite. It had an excellent sauce, and perfect amount of spice. The cabbage was also great. For dessert we finished off with the chocolatier, which was also great. The espresso ice cream was delicious. My only complaint would be that the scallops dish only comes with 3 scallops. Upon ordering, the waitress informed us it would be 8$ for an additional scallop. I feel that since they are encouraging it to be shareable, it should have been 4 scallops to start with. This pretty much forces you to buy into their upcharge or else split an odd number. Its not a big cost, to me its just the concept of it. My girlfriend said the carrots could have been a little hotter, but she was happy with everything else. Overall a good experience and good personable staff, they are friendly and explain each dish as its brought out. Our bill prior to tip we also got one drink each came to 132$ so expect to spend 150$+ for two people. Note: for pictures, my girlfriend got excited and mixed the gnocchi prior to pic, it was presented more elegantly :
Such an underwhelming experience at Nola. I had such high hopes after reading the reviews and looking at the intriguing flavor combos in their menu. The 2 stars are for our great server and the open kitchen concept. The ambience is moody but it’s crowded and way too loud. Maybe not the place for a relaxing date night.. maybe a good vibe for a night out with friends. We were a table of 3 and ordered 6 items to share—Reuben gyozas, Pickerel, Sourdough bread and butter, Haloumi salad, Potato Gnocchi, Karaage chicken. The gyozas were surprisingly okay-good but I was expecting so much more if you’re gonna put 6 pieces of gyoza on a plate and charge $15. The pickerel itself was dry but we liked the sunchoke puree and fried ?parsnip garnish. The sourdough was good but again, I was expecting so much more for a 2 pieces of halved slices and butter for $7. We liked the Haloumi salad with candied walnuts, grapes, ?radish, greens and apples—a touch too sweet but still enjoyable and refreshing. Potato gnocchi and chicken karaage were let downs.. the gnocchi had some kind of curry taste to it turmeric? even though it doesnt say that in the menu. The karaage was overseasoned and dry.. it was also literally 60-70% slaw with 5 slices of chicken on top. Now having gone, I don’t understand the reviews.
My wife and I frequent many restaurants in the city and Beyond. We love our food love our service and love the atmosphere. We have both worked in the industry for many many years and consider ourselves food lovers and open to new experiences. That being said, the food at Nola was excellent. The service was mediocre at first but when we got to know our server and the staff it seemed to flow a lot better. The food was Top Shelf, filled with tiny nuances of sweet savory and Spice and seemed really well balanced. But to be absolutely honest things seemed to be very mechanical and unenthusiastic. Seem to be just a job as opposed to a passion. We believe when you go out to have a nice dinner it should be interactive and intriguing both for the server and for the guest in order to have an overall experience that is worthy of talking about. When we approached the kitchen staff, which is an open kitchen, it seems that are compliments as well as our questions were met with arrogance in a concrete wall. It's too bad because what they have there is pretty great and it could be greater with more of I'm interactive feel. All in all we had a great date night. I just wish the staff would feel like it wasn't more of a work environment as opposed to and enjoyment.
Amazing food and great service. There was nothing we tried that we didn't like. Especially loved the sourdough and tomato salad! We did the 'chef's table' thing and enjoyed watching the kitchen in action. We wished for a set menu option though and maybe a bit more planned interaction like a quick intro to how the kitchen is set up or the planning behind some of the dishes, some kind of insight into why this restaurant is special. Evan was a great host though and kindly answered our questions. Great if you're looking for something more informal and self directed.
