Mt Maxwell Provincial Park offers a series of view points to explore on a trail along the cliff edge. The views are amazing and you get to see the Burgoyne Valley and Bay from high above, as well as the shorelines of the adjacent islands. You can drive all the way to the very top of the mountain, but since it was our first time, we chose to park just below the viewpoint trailhead and hike to the top. The hike is a 30 - 45 min walk below some beautifully smelling pine trees. The trail is well marked and the view points are protected by a railing where it might be dangerous to go to the very edge of the cliff.
Difficult hike because of insufficiently detailed maps and poor trail marking. Got lost several times on the "Girlfriend trail" trail section #3 and could not make it up to the peak, or the Burgoyne bay lookout. Spent time wandering through what looked like trail but ended up at hedges of dense Himalayan blackberry that cannot be easily passed. Be careful and pay attention to your map when you hike from the Burgoyne Bay side of the mountain. Parking: Parking along the narrow road that divides Mt Maxwell and Burgoyne Bay Park. There are numerous locations along the road that have appropriate clearings to park your vehicle so keep on driving until you see a safe spot to park. There is also a parking lot at the end of the road near the kayak launch. Restrooms: There is a single outhouse in Burgoyne Bay Provincial Park, a short 15 min walk from the southern Mt Maxwell Trailheads. Located in butterfly meadows.
Had a great, fairly hard hike up trail #3 to the lookout on Mt. Maxwell. 1700 ft up.
Fun little hike with a couple relatively steep hills. Great view of the ocean too. Make sure to wear mosquito repellent though.
Impressive vistas, get a great view of the southend, mt bruce, burgoyne, fulford and surrounding southern gulf islands, or look to the west and see the samsun narrows and cowichan valley. Impressive forest with a good trail network which even leads down to burgoyne bay. Listen for the ravens. Great tall trees, keep your eyes open for the rare calypso orchid, such a treat. Salal berries for days in season, even some chanterells in fall. The kids and I love it here. Drive up cranberry and start at the top if you have 4x4.
Nice bay and anchorage with a few transient boats and of course the dinghy dock full of locals abusing the system.
Fabulous views in all directions
A beautiful place to walk especially now at daffodil point
The warden guy was a bit aggressive. He was telling g this guy to put his face licking dog on a leash. We were the only two there.
Absolutely gorgeous with great old growth hiking trails
