Another staple of Holyoke, Mel's offers up old world style Italian food that will probably bring back memories of your grandma. The restaurant itself is a little dated, but at this point it simply adds to its charm. There is a dining area, lounge area with a bar and a pickup window for to-go orders. I have only picked up orders from their pickup window, which has its own entrance on the left side of the building. We enjoy their meatballs and spaghetti sauce with meat very much, meatballs are large and only $1.50 each. At this point, for my family, Mel's has become comfort food.
Mel's is a decent neighborhood restaurant, but it's not worth getting off of the highway for. While the name suggests a 50's style American drive-in, Mel's is, in fact, a nondescript Italian restaurant on a nondescript Holyoke street. The prices are high for middling quality food. The Veal Saltimbocca was overcooked and tough. The Baked Stuffed Schrod had several large, tasty chunks of well-prepared fish, but almost no stuffing. A cup of Margarita Pizza soup was interesting and tasty. Stuffed Mushrooms were good, but plain. The pasta with meat sauce was a tasty side dish once a generous portion of grated Parmesan was added. The Quadruple Chocolate Mousse Pie is very rich and quite good. It was a little disappointing that there weren't more authentic Italian style desserts on the menu. . Prices seemed high for a neighborhood restaurant. Overall, there are probably better options for an Italian dinner in the area.
First time visiting Mel's. Excellent experience! The food was delicious, my favorite was a meat sauce the wait staff was prompt, courteous and attentive and the prices very reasonable. They have expanded their beer collection apparently and I was pleased that I get an ice cold draft of my favorite beer. Our reservation was for 6 p.m. and we stayed till after 8 I believe not realizing they shut at 7. They never said a word about closing time and even asked if they could convince us to have dessert after closing time had past. Wonderful first visit . I would definitely recommend.
Even after all of these years Mel's is still one of the best Italian Restaurant's around. I'm not sure why on a Friday night there were only a few diners. I have been away from Massachusetts since 1996 and was craving Italian. Anyone that's been in the south knows there's not much in the way of authentic Italian cuisine, unless of course you want a chain. The food at Mel's still the high quality I always remembered. The service and staff was friendly and very efficient. We started with the Fried Mozzarella with meat sauce and a small order of garlic bread. Both were excellent! My order was Chicken Marsala, which was very good but a little too much brown sugar for me. It came with a salad or soup and a side of pasta... The only choice of course, is spaghetti with meat sauce. We ordered a side of homemade meatballs and their traditional homemade crinkle cut fries. As promised nothing regarding quality has ever been compromised at this restaurant. No matter how much time has passed, the food is still authentic and amazingly delicious. My dining partner had the baked stuffed shrimp she declared as delicioso!! Too bad I'm not in this area anymore because I know I'd definitely be a regular customer.
I wanted to like this place but...honestly, who puts MEAT SAUCE on a chicken parm? I didn’t know it was meat sauce as it was not specified on the menu. I’ve never known any restaurant to randomly give you meat sauce. I cannot eat red meat, haven’t touched red meat in 10 years and I became extremely ill. People have sued for less. I won’t be going back ever. It’s also extremely overpriced. I’m all for supporting small business but come on, guys. The bill was more than my utilities for the month and that was for two entrees!
Wonderful Family Night with great food and awesome service. Can't wait to go back again. We had the cheesy garlic bread, fried mozzarella for our appetizers. For our main selections: Veal Parm, Chicken Parmesan, Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken& Spaghetti Special and a spaghetti w/meatsauce. Yummy!!! Everything came out terrific and hot. The waitress was fantastic!!! She had seven tables and was very attentive and no mistakes with the orders. Very good dinner. Dessert was wonderful too. The waitress sang for one person in our party.
I go there to get spaghetti and mea sauce for my dad and I get some meatballs for myself. My dad liked the spaghetti there and I think the meatballs are good and at a good price. I have to spend $10 there in order to use my debt card. I've gone to the restaurant a few times and it was nice.
Hidden on a side street in Holyoke, Mel's was a very pleasant surprise. We met relatives for dinner and were a group of 7 who were easily accommodated. The service was excellent as was the food. I had baked scrod with baked potato and it was excellent. everyone enjoyed their meal and had no room for desert. Parking is on the street or in the church parking lot next door. Highly recommended!
Needs an update after all the years. Atmosphere / ambiance - Looks like it hasn't changed in thirty plus years. Minus one star Cleanliness - Silverware was filthy... Can only imagine the other things you'd find. Minus one star Service - Wait staff were pleasant, but service was very slow. No one could remember what we ordered. Minus one star Food - The recipes haven't changed since the place had opened. Whomever is doing the cooking needs to meet Salt and Pepper... Everything was horribly bland. Minus one star I do not know why so many people clamour over this place... Probably for nostalgic reasons... But does not warrant a special trip unless you need a place with super bland food to take your nana.
Took over a hour to get our food for a party of 10. The stuffed peppers were mushy, you only get 3 baked stuffed shrimp for $20, the spaghetti sauce tasted like chilli. Very disappointed, I had heard good things about this place but I won't go back.
