A very interesting and unique store. Octavia Book Bindery provides so much more than simple book bindery, athough thesis binding and bible restoration are popular items. Inside you will find true book craftmanship, an art gallery, a bookstore specialising in odd, interesting, and obscure books seperate business, as well as a hang out for intelligent and; sometimes not so intelligent conversation. The atmosphere is warm, more often than not etched with the full bodied feel of classic vinyl playing in the background. There is a sense of knowledge floating through the air in this family friendly environment. Overall Octavia is a fun place to visit. Fun fact: Octavia is Calgary's oldest book bindery. Established in 1926 they recently celebrated their 90th birthday! Worth checking out!
Very unprofessional. I do not understand why University of Calgary has this as the only binding option. When I graduated I got my thesis bounded from the basement of the Education building back in 2012. But last year, we had to go to Octavia Book Bindery for my wife's thesis. They took a little over 6 months yes, it's unbelievable but true to bind her thesis. We finally got it after numerous phone calls and messages. They have been shifted to the owner's house from their downtown location, which is not professional either. I hope University of Calgary will look into this matter of professionalism. Quality wise, it's nothing special but quite expensive. I could send her thesis to anywhere in the world and get at least the same if not much better quality at less than half price including the parcel cost both ways. Again: very unprofessional!!
I got 4 copies of my M.Sc. thesis done here. All my dealings with them have been very pleasant. After an initial disappointment caused by extraneous issues, I am very happy with the way my thesis turned out, but I actually paid extra to have the University of Calgary emblem on it - it wasn't there. Only realized when I got home. I do have a couple constructive comments: 1. When you guys are "open", make sure you are there! 2. Your prices are quite high. When paying that high of a price, it is reasonable to expect a little faster than you currently deliver 7 weeks in my case. After thinking about it, I am changing my rating from 4 to 2. The experience was quite poor considering the price and time I had to wait. Edit: I just noticed that the bindery accidentally duplicated my dedications page. Changing star rating to 1.
Robert is a phenomenal person with true passion for what he does. His work is amazingly detailed and a privilege to witness. Calgary could not be more fortunate to have someone like Robert readily available. We brought in an heirloom Bible, which Robert advised be rebound. He had the perfect leather right at hand, and had it complete within our requested rush 10 month deadline for a very reasonable price. He's given a gift to the family that will last generations, and we could not ask for more. Thank you Robert, and everyone at Octavia that helped with our project.
Although I have not personally had work done through Octavia, I have had a couple of different friends who live in Calgary have had restoration pieces completed here and have been thoroughly impressed. The transformation was incredible. This store is on my "must visit" when I go to Calgary next. I have a few journals I intend on having made to gift to friends. I have talked with Robert on the phone and I immediately loved his character.
DO NOT RECOMMEND. I finally received my thesis books 9 months after ordering them. I was disappointed in how much I paid and the quality of the books. The printing on the binding was crooked, there was ink transfer marks from one page to another, the spine was coming apart, and many of the pages were wrinkled. I also found there was poor communication, I would always have to reach out to ask about the status of my books over the 9 months. I was told several times my books were being mailed out to me and after several months of following up on the location of my books I was told numerous excuses, and lies, as to why they were not delivered..
Octavia has made me four different journals, all with a unique style. The owner will probably killing me for posting a picture of this one because it is his least favorite but I love it. The leather is so soft, it's perfectly portable, and the design makes me feel like its my own personal journal. The team is passionate about what they do and have their own unique way of doing business. Be patient, be kind, and if you have a concern, let them know. I have received nothing but excellent service.
I've used the bindery for a beautiful and custom wedding guest book. I ordered early and had pleasant experiences with the owner who guided me through the process so I wasn't expecting same day or rush service. The end result was a simply stunning keepsake that will be cherished forever. Thanks again. We are thrilled.
Great experience working with Octavia on a set of proposals with a short turn around time. They were able to work with us directly to achieve the design we were after with our bound books! We paid the price for the short turn around but the end product was worth it! So happy these types of services are still avaialble!
Very unhappy. We paid for our books in full in January. Have a receipt. Upon delivery we realized that the pages weren’t trimmed as per our agreement. Robert offered to take the books back and trim them. But then the delays started to happen. The excuses started pouring in. Today I found out he wants an additional $252 and if he doesn’t get it he’ll auction the books off. So now we’re out of books and out of money. Very unethical business owner.
