We stopped for a quick beer and a pretzel mid afternoon and the service was fast, the food was good and the beer was cold and refreshing! What else can you ask for? :
Update April 2023: Lunch! Always had dinner here, now I have even another reason to come! Not that I already didn't. Schnitzel on a bun topped with sauteed onions, apple and brie. Whoa! So good. Schnitzel, spaetzel and kraut oh my! The short of it is that if you are in the area, or even if your not in the area, Maximilian's is a must eat. The in-laws have been going here since the '80s, and I don't think the menu has changed! Which is good. They make the best schnitzel, hands down, bar-none. Service is what you expect from and old world restaurant, attentive and unflinching. The dining room has an German charm that gives you a sense of the alps. The patio outback has a terrific view of the pond with a fountain. Very picturesque. Reservations are recommended, and covid protocols are followed, depending on when this is read, please check with the restaurant for details. Was just there this evening, the food, which I thought was impossible, has improved. The best schnitzel I have ever had. Kitchen was on-point tonight, like usual, but even better.
It wasn't the most positive experience. The cuisine is declared as German, but in fact there are only names of dishes from German. The salad as a compliment was disgusting. It feels like sliced vegetables have been waiting in vinegar for at least a week. The main dishes are also far from perfect. The waiter could not clearly answer the question whether there is WiFi in the restaurant
Came for the schnitzel, stayed for the schnitzel. Not a fancy place but I'd come back, just for the schnitzel.Food: 4/5
The food was ok, good quality and fairly tasty, and the location nice. Funky kind of ambience. However the service was a bit slow -- for instance they didn't even top up our water for the time we were there and we were the only customers.
Constantly excellent, the jagerschnitzell is the my favourite, great staff, beautiful building. Patio is nice and has a view of the Tay Canal, it is shaded at the diner hour tho. We have been celebrating special occasions here for 30 years… always great.
Food is always great, service always excellent! Nice clean restaurant, also does take out. Hungarian goulash is my personal favorite!
Great food and atmosphere, definitely worth a visit when you're in town, butter potatoes are a must try!Recommended dishesButter Potatoes, Chicken Schnitzel
Maximilian actually has authentic German cuisine unlike some other "German" restaurants I've been to. Very good quality meat and we had a hard time finishing our plates. The prices were very reasonable we had lunch *not dinner*. The server was knowledgeable and very pleasant. I highly recommend stopping by this quaint restaurant!
We went to Maximilian for lunch on Mother's Day. Our expectations were high since we love Schnitzel. Very Disappointed. To start, the first thing that we saw when we got to the restaurant was one of the cook smoking right at the front door. This already tells a lot about the place. Service was good. Very nice waitress. Not that is a bad thing or bothered us, but the atmosphere is more old people and the place smells old. The washroom is upstairs, so no wheelchair accessible. We ordered half Schnitzel with mushroom sauce. The portion was generously big. But the whole plate was tasteless, very plain. No flavour. We drove all the way from Ottawa to celebrate mother's Day and to try the Schnitzel. Unfortunately, it was not this time.
