My coworker and I picked the restaurant simply because we had never had East African food before! I have no experience with this cuisine, so I can't speak to the authenticity of it, but it was FANTASTIC. I had the veggie combo, and as a big eater, I couldn't eat all of it, so A+ on the portion size. My coworker had lamb of sorts, and it was quite tasty as well. The person working, was very friendly, and the food came out quite quickly as well. In and out in 35 minutes made this a great lunch time meal for us. I'd eat here again! The only thing I was surprised about though, thought there would be some chicken options. Not a complaint, just an observation. Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian options available! Parking: Parking can be limited on the street! Dietary restrictions: Definitely not GF. Don't kid yourself thinking otherwise.
We came here to try the food here. We ordered veggie platter and Shiro with coffee. The food is super delicious. It feels like home cook food. It's so flavourful enjoyed the meal. It was too much food for 2 of us. But we enjoyed every bite. Would highly recommend this place. Would come back again.
NOT GLUTEN FREE. Not celiac friendly. Despite East African food having a reputation of being gluten free this place is not. I ended up projectile vomiting, until 1am. It ruined my night last night and not feeling 100% today either. The language barrier made it difficult to convey allergy information. I asked the waitress about wheat, barley or rye. She got another waitor who spoke more English, he also had trouble understanding. But waved the "you're fine" gesture. I suspect their injera has barley or wheat in it. It was impressively stretchy for "gf" Rating 2 stars instead of 1 because the food was good, staff were friendly, and it was a cute little spot with a sense of community.
Massawa is a city in Eritrea . Ethiopia is on its southern border. There are two types of cuisine here: East African and Mediterranean. I ordered the Awazi Tibsi for $19.99. The flavour was rich and spicy... Spice was mild to medium heat level. The meat was not tough, but not melt in your mouth either. They give you a very generous portion of injera bread to go with your meal. Overall, the service was polite, the food was tasty, and the atmosphere was bright at my window seat. I would probably return.
Succulent lamb in an amazing moderately spiced sauce, everything was made to perfection, draft beer was nice and cold and we both started off with avacoda banana and mango smoothies real fruit you can taste the difference, the host was super friendly and spoke good English, excellent service.
Excellent food, very tasty and reasonably priced. Noisy popular! which made it a bit hard to hear our server, who missed our son's order. She was very apologetic and they whipped up his order immediately after being informed. Highly tasty and looking forward to going again.
Amazing food, staff was very nice! We pretty much had the place to ourselves. The food was fast and honestly so good. Never had East African food before but my partner dragged me there and very happy he did. We had a great night Vegetarian options: Had their veggie combo and it was to die for. I loved the cabbage dish and my partner loved the green bean dish
A little bit expensive and kind of small portion size but the food was excellent.
A delightful place that features both East African and Mediterranean dishes. The East African dishes are served with injera, a spongy flatbread that is used as the utensil for rolling up or dipping in the food. We had the vegetarian special and the awaze tibs spicy chunks of lamb. Both were excellent. Service was super-friendly and the music and decor added to the pleasant ambiance. Highly recommended. Vegetarian options: Multiple choices Parking: Ample metered street parking
Best lighting I’ve seen around town. Good café and strong music.
