So much information packed into this place. I could spend hours rereading all the facts! If you have a few hours be sure to stop by to learn about the local history in the water. There is so much to read and there are activities for the kids too!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
We took a tour of the museum and the lighthouse as well. The lighthouse tour was guided and well informed. Even though it rained on us as we walked around, we still had a good time and learned a lot.Visited onWeekdayReservation recommendedNot sure
So we did the museum and lighthouse tour. It's $12 to do both. We started by doing the lighthouse tour. Our tour guide was amazing. I'm not gonna lie when he walked up holding a banjo and said I don't normally stick to the script I was like oh boy here we go but boy was I wrong. After laying the banjo down we walked over to the old life saving house and was given a history of the town and how it came to be as well as how the local "coast guard" started. We then saw the officers quarters and went into the lighthouse. Spoiler alert you can't climb to the top where the light is something about lead paint or something like that, but non the less still great to see up close. There are exhibits inside with pictures that show things like the old fog horn house and radio towers. We then were allowed to walk out on the cat walk down to where the old fog horn house was for a great view of the lighthouse and shore. The tour guide we had was great he threw in just enough facts to keep it informational while mixing in personal stores that tied everything together. This tour guide gave you insight that Google or Wikipedia will never have. Many of the stories were very funny and made everyone laugh. The local touch was great and was even able to get recommendations on good dining in the area. The inside of the museum is nice, it is on the smaller side so it didn't take too long to see all the exhibits. The old lenses from the light houses were pretty cool and i thought the section in the shipwrecks was interesting. There is a short video playing on a loop talking about stannards lighthouse and the history of that. There is also a working periscope that you can look out into Bay with inside of the areas. The staff inside was very friendly and informative. Would go back again if in the area
The one story, stone Marquette Maritime Museum contained SO much history and information on Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes. The large collection of Fresnei lenses was beautiful. The dedication to saving lives was evident in two small line feeding rescue cannons. The one from the early 1800s was named after Capt. Manby and was reported to save over 1000 stranded sailors and passengers. The Lyle gun improved upon the short barrelled line thrower and was said to have saved over 4500 people. Also learn more about the ships wrecked, native canoes, deep diving and other area history. Plan to spend an hour. Great for families and kids.
Only $7 to enter, and there is a lot of history packed into that small place, including a little gift shop. I bought an Edmund Fitzgerald snowglobe and I've noticed snowglobes have been hard to come by in the U.P. The displays are interesting and fun, with artifacts, a minature of Marquette, and a huge lighthouse fresno lens light! We hadn't meant to stay long, and ended up staying quite a while poking around. A favorite display was the periscope; you could actually sit at it and look through it up above the museum roof, and turn it to have a 360 view from that vantage point. Definitely recommend for history lovers and families.
The staff is friendly and courteous. The museum hosts some very interesting and informative displays about the maritime history around Lake Superior. The lighthouse tour was quite fun and interesting with Corey as guide.
Not really what I would consider a museum much at all. Some great history. Cool gift shop with reasonable prices. But the exhibits seemed so hard to appreciate... Very elementary. Lots of life rings. If you like those. Bring glasses to read the displays.
Small but very interesting museum. Has several Fresnel lighthouse lights. Also a neat video about finding a restoring a lighthouse light. They also had things on lake rescue and shipwrecks. Overall reasonably priced and a good place to visit.
The museum itself is a decent size. It takes probably about 45 minutes to walk through if you're reading the signs and actually paying attention. The lighthouse tour takes you up a bunch of stairs, so be prepared for that. I recommend doing both the lighthouse tour and the museum tour. The lighthouse tour was definitely the highlight of the trip as there are some beautiful photo opportunities on the lighthouse grounds. The tour guides are respectful and knowledgeable.
Fantastic museum, so much info and lots of cool artifacts as well. It sucks you in and it's beautiful. A good price as well. Had a good time here
