We had been having a very hard time finding a bakery or caterer that was near where we were holding our intimate backyard wedding in Orland, but I was so glad I remembered MarKel's was close by. We visited MarKel's a few years ago for lunch and it was delicious, so I reached out and was excited to see that they have an extensive catering menu. Kelly was incredible to work with and helped me make decisions via email and phone, as I was out-of-state regarding our cake and farewell brunch. The cake was delicious and exactly what I had asked for- a simple two-tiered naked iced cake. The almond cake was fabulous as well as their carrot cake, but they can really do just about any flavor you'd like. Our farewell brunch was also fantastic: a bagel bar with all the fixings, corned beef hash, assorted quiches, sausage, bacon, and mimosas and bloody marys– yum! Delivery was prompt and super easy, I would highly recommend them to cater any event you are hosting. If you go in, make sure to sit on the patio on a nice day!
Pure magic at MarKel’s Bakehouse in Castine, Maine. From the salmon eggs benedict to the specialty sandwiches and soups to the strawberry rhubarb pie - the food here is gourmet! Check the daily specials on your way in. They have a great choice of wine and beer here. The outdoor deck offers great views too.
Markel’s Bakehouse formerly known as Bah’s is a tiny little breakfast nook and lunch hidden in beautiful downtown Castine. As the spring thaw continues here in Maine, we ventured out for Brunch on a Saturday. I do plan on a return visit, but for now I’m giving it a 4. Here’s why: The place decked with all types of delicious pastries and assorted breakfast goodies. It was later in the morning so apparently we missed the famous donut run that was promised in the sign. The place is small, but set up really nice. It’s like in a regular house that has been redone as an eating establishment. As the weather was getting nicer, it was VERY warm in there. But I can’t ding them for that, being Maine and all. The weather changes faster than most people change their minds. I do have one negative, but that’s coming next. I had an omelette, and my partner had waffles with freshly made whipped cream and fresh fruit. Both was quite delicious and looked great, See pics. Here’s my ding: -They had no buffalo chicken : Not a deal breaker, just disappointing. The view off the deck was spectacular, and while I got pictures, I definitely plan on going back when when the snow is gone. And the very best thing about MarKel’s that it is a THE place for the local’s in the morning. As one of them told us: “This is where we come early every morning. It’s always the same people, sitting in the same seats and you can find out what happened yesterday.” Classic. No wonder Markel’s has been a Castine Landmark for over 20 years. Pay them a visit.
They have good food and good variety. Some are pricey. I don’t know what the standard health guidelines here in ME but staff don’t use gloves when they are making the sandwiches and pick food with their bare hands. They don’t wear hairnets either.
Great food and nice atmosphere. The balcony is lovely on sunny days. The Mexican BLT is, personally, my favorite sandwich. I order it almost every time I go here. The food is a little pricey but not at all out of the ordinary for things in this town, and you certainly pay for the quality that you get. The baguettes that the sandwiches come on are incredible.
This is a great place to have breakfast or lunch. PLENTY of seating inside and outside. Good views of the harbor from the outdoor patio. It is centrally located. Gourmet sandwiches and my personal favorite is the turkey, cranberry, brie on a baguette. Lots of pastries to choose from. Huge drink selection. Can't go wrong here.
I have visited Markel's about six times in the last month. I've enjoyed both lunch and breakfast at this popular local spot. Everything here is cooked to perfection. Hearty sandwiches, creative quiche, generous salads, delectable baked goods...all prepared with care and creativity. Regular fare and specials are all on the chalkboard. Today's delight was an omelet: light, fluffy and filled with tasty mushrooms, cheddar and a generous portion of fresh spinach. My partner had his favorite go-to, Eggs Benedict with traditional Canadian bacon. If you like, they offer the dish with lox. You can't leave without trying the sweets. Goodies are self service from the cupboard. It's hard to choose, but you won't be disappointed with any choice you make. And freshly brewed coffee tops it off. Seating is indoors or out on the deck. And it's just a short walk from both inns on Main Street.
Great for baked goods, coffee an tea. Nice seating on the deck made for a beautiful start to the day.
Very cute and quirky place - perfect for lunch. We went with family and everyone got their food pretty quickly. It all tasted very fresh and was delicious. Plus the pastry section will put you in a contented sugar coma just looking at it.
A friendly and delicious stop in Castine: excellent coffee and fine pastries. Plus they're great people: we arrived after closing and they still welcomed us warmly. Well worth a stop!
