First of all let me jus say the total ambience of Marais is very Parisian but with a slight American twist. This critique is for the breakfast/lunch service. Laid back atmosphere, all servings inhouse is done on fine Chinayes the French part but the service is slightly lacking, the server was neither warm no friendly but efficient. The food choices was limited and more geared for the vegetarians, there were a few Stars that shined from my meal there the homemade donuts for one warm, moist and not too sweet, they serve one of the best Quiche Lorraine I've had outside of Paris itself warm and custard/cheesy like with bacon chunks on the bottom eith a side salad this dish really shone as a Star in the menu, I also tried the Crepe and the Lavash wrapthis is where the not so Parisian comes in, purely for the American tastes both were decent a lil under seasoned, but for being made fresh were slightly warm if not cold by the time they arrived in front of methis is where they need to add one more person. I ordered two of their breakfast croissantsegg & bacon here is where the true art of a Parisian making eggs shines, eggs were fluffy almost creamy fluffy custard like, the bacon was so perfectly rendered down that it melted in your mouth and the croissant perfectly flaky, light and buttery! If a sandwich can be a masterpiece this is it! This intrigues me to want to try their dinner service but for now 4 stars for the food alone, service goes down to a two star.
I've been a few times - once before the reorganization into a cafe & market, and a few times after. I've always had good experiences - the dinner at the old Marais for my university graduation is one of my fondest memories; I still have the card from the chef's tasting menu! I'm sad to remove a star because the market is not meeting my possibly too high expectations. I was in the other day and I bought a bag of extremely moldy bread without thinking to check, and I was so disappointed that I only noticed after I drove the hour home. I let the staff know on Facebook and they were very gracious, but it really cast a shadow on the experience for me :
The Chicken Sandwich is to die for. Hands down the best I've ever had, paired with the french fries!!!! My lord!!!
I went here to try the breakfast. I sat at the bar, there was initially no one else at the bar and two tables had people in them. The server greeted me but did not ask if I wanted anything. After 15 minutes two older gentleman sat down at the bar and asked for coffee, I guess they were regulars and knew you had to ask for coffee. I also asked for coffee and had to ask for refills, never was I asked if I wanted a refill. Another 15 minutes still haven't been asked if I wanted anything. The chef came out to the bar to ask the sever if she needed help and she said yes. The chef looked at me sitting there, did not say A word to me and went back to the kitchen. A little while later another person showed up but did not seem to do anything but talk to the people she knew. Next, a husband and wife came in with their babies, they were obviously regulars, and their order was taken. I patiently sat there and when the couple's food came I asked if I could order, 45 minutes in just taking my food order? Every step of the way, I had to ask for everything, cream and sugar, utensils, salt and pepper etc... to say the service was not great is an understatement. The food however, was really, really good. I had the quiche, which was excellent and I also had the egg "mcmuffin." Those two items and coffee was $18, a little pricey but very tasty. The "ambiance" is very nice if your into that type of thing. I probably won't go back.
Awful experience. Well overpriced for the quality at hand here. Service was painfully slow. Our server "Peter" was not well informed and unpleasant. We love trying the chef tasting menus. Despite us booking the table for the tasting menu, server "sort of forced" us to have caviar on top of it. Spent 4 hours there and in the end we were ready to skip the rest of the "surprise tasting" but thankfully the ordeal ended. "Surprise tasting" was not a surprise. It was bits and bobs from the main menu. Extremely unsatisfying place. It needs a complete overhaul of staff and chef to make this place work. Much better places in Detroit area for fine dining. Please do not waste your time and money on Marais.
First time back since they turn into a market . Waited 10 minutes for menu after asking for one. Waited 45 minutes for the food and arrived cold and express the matter to the server all she said was sorry it was hot when she brought it out from the kitchen. Al little high $$$ for something that was good but want excellent or anything to really rave about . Understaff and over price .
Yvette is lovely and helped me to my car as I use a walker. Also loved scrumptious desserts and took them home too late for lunch. Did not care too much for cold sandwiches. Sure hot, lunch would be better and will try to come back with my sister and hubby next week if it works out. Beautiful, store and love all of it.
Chef David is a genius. The food here is phenomenal and worth every penny. Great atmosphere, décor, and ambiance. The service is fantastic as well - ask for Michael. Hands down the best French restaurant in Michigan, probably the best restaurant period.
My wife just came home with a $70 order for dinner and our burgers were very pink inside despite ordering them well done. Not impressed when you order a $12 burger no friesand you have to take the patty off and finish cooking it in a pan. We are one and done and will not return. They didn't seem overly concerned when we called to complain.
We went there for a late lunch looking around drooling over everything . The desserts looked delicious but we decided to get chicken wings. It looked good, when we tried to eat them... it was petrified like wood. I don't know how long they were hanging out behind that counter, but that was ridiculous.
