The old Victorian section of the cemetery with lots of impressive statues and lush tree cover is a perfect place for a walk and some reflection. There is a downloadable self guided tour map on their website that shows the graves of prominent people buried in the cemetery. They also have story stones, which are stone markers with engraved stories of the cemetery and snippets of some literature.
My brother has been buried there for almost 20 yrs. So have my grandmother and mom. It’s always clean no matter how long no one has visited. All names on stones weather standing or flat a visible including the ones that been there since the 1800’s that I’m sure no one visits. The place is beautiful.
Beautiful, peaceful cemetery with deep history amongst its rolling hills and curving pathways. The older part, on the Forest Hills side, is a lot more interesting with its old majestic graves than the newer part, the Briarwood side. The Briarwood side is really close to the E / F subway station.
We have relatives buried in the 1980s and '90s in the older sections of the cemetery. It was difficult finding their graves, but this great guy who works at the cemetery saw us struggling to find their graves on the cemetery map. I wish we had gotten his name, but we found the graves after he guided us in his pick-up to the section where their graves were. The cemetery is very well maintained, and they have at least one! great employees.
Walking thru the cemetery today, as I often do because it’s the easiest way to get over to the next street. One of your grounds keepers, older white gentleman, almost mowed me down with the golf cart he was driving, as he whizzed by me almost clipping my shoulder, he didn’t even turn back to apologize acknowledge my presence. You should teach the men to a bit more respectful of pedestrians. I could have been seriously hurt.
If your loved one is located in the back of the cemetery and you travel by public transportation you should take the F to Briarwood and exit in the middle of the platform then where you see the sign Exit Van Wyck service road and a right arrow. Google maps gave me horrible directions giving me more than a 15 minute walk that was like a maze but this way takes you only a few feet from the cemetery.
Lovely grounds, small stones on rolling green lawns. beautiful mature trees, discrete sections that are different from one another. Very well set up on an historic site. All faiths seem well represented here, and grounds are very well taken care of. My family has been very pleased, and it has been a good number of years that they have been serving us.
My father’s ashes were buried there in 1973. It was right next to a beautiful large tree. We could sit & lean against the tree & feel at peace. My daughter passed away and I had her buried in the same plot as my dad’s. It was still beautiful. I went back last year & the tree was gone. I couldn’t find the grave because the tree was gone. I went inside to ask. They have me a bad photo copy of that part of the cemetery. I still couldn’t find it after walking around freezing. I went back and asked if someone could show me where it was. He took the truck and I had to walk. I was very disappointed because of the tree. It was the largest tree there & they said they had to take it away. They said they would put another tree there. I went back today 12/29/19. Instead of a tree they put 3 more graves. It took me over an hour to find it and I went to the building that is suppose to be open until 5pm. It was 4pm and closed. I finally found the grave at 4:40. I was so upset that I just broke down and cried. Some of the graves were out of the ground a little. One was bent from the center. It looked like the property was not cleaned for quite awhile. It was between Christmas and News Years. The weather was nice that week so it should not have looked so bad and dirty. I know I sound like a complaining beast but I’m not really a complainer. I brought my daughter here in 2017 and my sister had her husband & brother in law here because it was so peaceful. It is very upsetting to me. My daughter is a young adult. I live over an hour from there and had I known it was going to be unkept I would never have brought my daughter or recommended the cemetery. They lied to me about planting another tree. I’m sorry about complaining but I’m just so upset.
The place is very nice - clean, calm, elegant and peaceful. Staffs are all very friendly and helpful. Easy process. Then I placed my mom in the Memorial Niches room...then found out they don't open the niches room on Sunday! I wish someone would have told me before I made the purchase decision!
it's a clean and nice cemetery but the staff in the main office needs work, I visited their offices to update my new address in 2014 and they still haven't updated it. I keep having to go to their offices every 4-6 months to remind them about the change of address. Other than that, this place is a great cemetery for your loved ones.
