Interesting place to call into, located by the trackside at Mallaig railway station, especially if interested in local Scottish history. Good value for the low admission charge, which is valid for a year for return visits. The displays are well laid out and give a fascinating & informative insight into the towns heritage and history. There is a gift shop in the entrance area which sells good quality cards, books, merchandise etc. and is worth a visit when visiting Mallaig.
We were waiting for the Jacobite train to arrive so in the mean time we popped into this place. Really loved it. Simple and well structured place. Explaining the history and lifestyle of Mallaig. Well worth it.
Brilliant wee museum and Sheila was very informative. Invaluable sense of humour and would recommend anyone who visits Mallaig to pop in.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Really interesting. Definitely worth the admission price, and worth at least an hour of your time. In recent years, little local museums have become a significant feature in West Coast and Hebridean tourism, and you are missing out if you don't visit them. Mallaig's is among the best.
The ticket woman red hair was so rude and annoying. Over the whole Scotland, I never met any person worse than her. When I paid, she said didn't accept card, although it obvious that there is a card payment. She also didn't allow visitor to go to the toilet. Not friendly and the museum is small. Avoid this museum
Really interesting and well worth the admission charge. Has a great local feel about it right next to the railway station. If your lucky you might see the Highlander Steam train.
I small but very interesting museum, giving the history of Mallaig, its fishing industry and the impact of the rail connection to Fort William from 1901. Well worth the admission price.
Popped in here after our train journey on The Jacobite. A very wet day, seeing Mallag in the rain, not much fun. Gives you an idea of how remote this area, once was. Harsh weather conditions and a good community spirit must have kept them going. Lovely lady on the desk,to chat too
To anyone going to Mallaig please avoid the Heritage Centre. We took the steam train to Mallaig and the town was wonderful and quaint. On the way back to the train we had an hour to kill and noticed the Heritage Centre. The woman behind the counter was the rudest person I have ever met. We decided to use the restroom before entering the centre, upon exiting the woman behind the counter informed me I had to make a donation for using the public rest room. The manner in which she spoke was incredible rude. I am not a rude person myself so just acknowledged her and we left once my wife had browsed the gift shop. Please find below a meaning of donation: "A donation is a gift given by physical or legal persons, typically for charitable purposes and/or to benefit a cause" Please note the above meaning does not say "if you use our public restroom you have to pay up"
A very informative small museum located next to the station. The entrance fee is a most reasonable £2.50. There are toilets on site and a small gift shop.
