I came in today to purchase something for myself with my 16-year-old daughter. We spent several minutes browsing the store, and one of the employees even asked if I needed help finding anything. At no point did anyone mention that my daughter was not permitted to be in the store.nWhen I took my purchase to the till, the cashier rudely asked for ID. I asked, “For me? I’m 51!” She replied, “Not you, her.” I explained that my daughter is 16, wasn’t purchasing anything, and didn’t have ID. I was then told there was a sign on the door stating that no minors were allowed in the store.nI explained that I’m not from the area and hadn’t noticed the sign. I said I’d never heard that minors weren’t allowed in liquor stores. The other employee asked where I was from, and I said Vancouver. He then told me that minors aren’t allowed in liquor stores there either and that many stores simply choose not to enforce it. That is not correct. A store may choose to have its own no-minors policy, but that is not the same as provincial law.nThe cashier then commented that my daughter had been “touching everything.” She had touched one can of alcoholic iced tea and commented that she didn’t realize they made those with alcohol. I immediately told her she wasn’t allowed to touch anything. She certainly was not “touching everything.” I then questioned the girl “so you won’t sell to me because I’m with my daughter?”, to which she curtly responded with my total.nIf this store has a no-minors policy, that’s entirely your choice. My issue is how it was handled. We were allowed to browse the store for several minutes, and an employee even offered assistance. If someone had simply said when we walked in, “Just so you know, our store doesn’t allow minors inside,” I would have immediately asked my daughter to wait outside. There would have been no issue whatsoever.nInstead, the matter wasn’t raised until I had finished shopping and was at the till. The interaction was rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. Customers should be treated with respect, and staff should accurately explain that this is the store’s policy—not tell customers that accompanied minors are prohibited by law when that is not the case.nPolicies are one thing. Courtesy, professionalism, and accurate information are another.nn** Update: I appreciate the owner’s response and the clarification that the restriction is due to the store’s visible cigar humidor and tobacco legislation. As someone who doesn’t smoke, I was completely unaware that this applied to what appears to be a liquor store, and that was never explained to me in the store. When I was simply told that minors aren’t allowed and that other stores “just don’t enforce the law,” it was only natural to assume the employee was referring to liquor laws.nnMy concern remains with how the situation was handled. I understand that the staff don’t ID every customer at the door, but once it was apparent my daughter appeared underage, why not politely explain the restriction before we spent several minutes browsing? When the employee approached us to ask if we needed help, that would have been the perfect opportunity to explain the store’s policy at that point, I would have immediately asked my daughter to wait outside. Instead, the issue wasn’t raised until I was at the till, where the interaction made it seem as though I was about to be refused service because my daughter couldn’t produce ID.nnMy issue has never been with following the law. It has always been with the lack of communication and the rude, dismissive way the situation was handled. A simple conversation at the beginning of our visit would have prevented the entire misunderstanding.
Absolutely unacceptable customer service. My experience at Lighthouse Liquor Store was one of the worst retail experiences I've had. The lady at the counter wearing glasses was extremely rude, dismissive, and appeared irritated from the moment I approached. She repeatedly made faces and displayed an attitude that made me feel completely unwelcome.nnWhat was even more concerning was that some of her behaviour came across as discriminatory, leaving me feeling singled out and disrespected. Whether intentional or not, no customer should leave a store feeling that way.nnI came in ready to support a local business and would have gladly left a tip for good service, but instead I was met with hostility and poor treatment. This was my first visit, and it will likely be my last.nnManagement should seriously address the customer service standards at this location. No customer deserves to be treated with such disrespect. I would not recommend this store based on my experience.
I found the level of service in this establishment to be exceptional. I was just looking for a nice craft beer selection, which I found, but you can find just about any type of liquor here. The product is well displayed and arranged in an inviting manner. I would expect nothing less from a liquor store in the quaint town of Sechelt. It is hard for me to judge price comparison, being from the States, but I thought they were reasonable.
Amazing. Service was superb with a friendly staff member that greeted me at the door and had very knowledgeable recommendations for what I was looking for. Well stocked and clean. Prices were normal. Checkout was friendly and fast. Plus a free bag of ice for every $40 spent. Go no further for all your liquor/spirits needs.
I usually don’t roll this way, but I suggest you go to BCLC if you can. Better service the folks at BCLC are very proactively helpful and really know their product and usually better prices, esp when on sale.
