Perhaps the worst office in Lake County government to deal with. Employees down right make up answers to pacify you in the moment when you can actually get them on the phone. You can call, email or send smoke signals…. You will not be given an accurate answer. Those in charge blame it on staffing and have excuses for everything. How could the elected official think this is acceptable? It’s NOT. Hire people, change the organizational structure around but certainly do not lie to people and figure it out.
Let me start by saying that I missed the second payment of our property taxes for the first time in about 40 years. I paid the delinquent taxes plus penalty by the due date. I received a letter in the mail saying I haven't paid.The letter was generated BEFORE the due date for late payment. How can you send something out like this. There was no mention that payment may have crossed in the mail so if already paid, disregard this letter. This was our first communication with the Treasurer's office and I was not impressed with how you handle you business.
If your property tax is past due, you know how much they charge for the interests? 18% every 6 months, on a rolling basis! That’s more than 50% by one year! Not to mention all those fees they add to the final bill!
We dropped our payment in the "Property Tax Payment box outside the building entry on the way out of town for 3 weeks nine days before the due date. When the check finally cleared, it was cashed on the day after the due date. Then, we received a late notice soon after we returned, demanding late fees. I will never again pay without walking out with a dated reciept in my hand! GROSS MISMANAGEMENT!
I called because I overpaid on my property tax. They said they could not issue a refund and would keep the overpayment because it was a "voluntary payment"
I left a phone message and received a phone call back within the hour. The worker walked me through a few steps online to answer my questions and stayed on the line to make sure I received my answer. She was courteous and professional.
If their posted hours are to open at 8:30 AM then they should start answering the phone at 8:30 AM. This is ridiculous!
Taxes are Theft!
