TLDR: Good Food, Bleak Environment, Minimal Service We read the reviews prior to our arrival, but we were driving through Golden from Revelstoke on our way to Lake Louise and really craved some Chinese food, so we made the risky decision to give them the benefit of the doubt. The restaurant is a large space, but only the middle room/space/area was used for dine-in. Everything else was used for behind-the-scenes works, except right out in the scene. The restaurant was lit by these creepy bluish-white fluorescent lights that weren’t particularly welcoming. The chairs were covered in some sort of brown drape, unappealing to the eyes. Some tables were covered with cloths while others were not. There is WiFi available. After considering the reviews which overwhelmingly negatively highlighted the Ginger Beef, as well as our own cravings, we settled on the Beef w. Black Pepper Sauce, Scallops and Prawns w. Black Bean Sauce, and the Ma Po Tofu. The food came around 10 minutes later but not all at once. The beef was tender and juicy and the salt and pepper sauce/coating was delicious. It came stir-fried with some green peppers, carrots, and onions. The scallops and prawns were fresh and not mushy in the slightest. These also came with the assorted vegetables. The black bean sauce was savory and delicious. The tofu came with some green peas which I found unusual and non-belonging, and the sauce was a mix between the traditional and some soy-sauce mixture; it wasn’t quite traditional and I did not love it. There was only one waiter on duty and he was busier working the kitchen and take-out orders than paying attention to the dine-in customers. He seemed nice and apologetic, though. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant if you’re looking for a quick fix on more-traditional Chinese dishes. The reviews seemed to mainly circulate around the lackluster quality of the restaurant’s Westernized-Chinese offerings so I think that’s where the margin of error was large. Otherwise, come for the food, not the service or ambience. And no, we did not experience any indigestion.
Very good and comfort chinese food. More spicy more tasty, ask for Sriracha sauce.Recommended dishesWonton Soup
Just terrible The restaurant was cold, no one was there, which normally would have been clue enough to leave but we felt like Chinese food. The service was indifferent. The restaurant was cold. The food was edible but that was it. Even if you have a craving, don't bother with this place.
Taste:4/5 Price:$$ Service:3/5 Not bad for a Chinese restaurant. Ordered a more traditional cuisine. Shredded potato with spicy and sour sauce, fish fillet with special spicy sauce and three kinds seafood with mixed vegetables. The fish fillet wasn't exactly how it would taste of you were to go to a traditional Szechuan restaurant, but not bad. Overall fairly good Chinese food.
I like their food eaten there several times. Very pleasant servant on her own, sundays! But... at noon, NEVER go sit under/by the windows on streetside: food gonna be COLD in 2 minutes, thanks to their blowin' AC!
Had Shanghai noodles, mixed vegetables and ginger beef. Most ginger beef was just batter!! Noodles tasted old. Mixed vegetables were good. That's it. Worst Chinese food we've ever had. And we were HUNGRY YET!!!
Not great service over the phone. Wanted to change out an item and they were very unwilling to give price over the phone. When we went to pick up we were given 3 soyasauces even though we ordered a 3 person meal. Most Chinese food places we've been the food is piping hot and usually overflowing... this was not the case. The food was cool even though we walked 2 minutes across the parking lot to pick up from our hotel. We had to ask for plates and cutlery even though we were picking up and this is a fairly consistent time for tourists and travellers to be coming through. The food was also extremely dry. We ordered the sweet and sour pork and gingerbeef and both had zero sauce and were very chewy. Flavourwise, we would have been better off eating it with soya sauce which is saying something. We also got the beef chop suey which looked like it was made it with pork as the meat was white. Would not order or even recommend. Better off getting pizza or convenience store food.
Food is highly dubious, had the seaweed soup to find out the seaweed was made of plastic. Rice was not sticky like it was supposed to be. Pork tastes weird, unable to describe. Some of us had indigestion after the meal. Refer to pics. Visit at your own risk.
This is the one and only Chinese restaurant in Golden. A lot of tourist groups have dinner in this restaurant. Not too bad at all. The price is expensive when you compare with Vancouver's restaurant. I had dinner here twice. I talked to the cook once. He said he worked in some famous restaurants in Vancouver for so many years before coming to Golden. So you know they are good stuff.
good food, super quick! a nice side of the road venture.
