An amazing historical place to visit of one of the great Civil War soldiers. Many of his personal items are on display. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. Directly from the home is Bowdoin College where Chamberlain was first a student. He later taught at the school and eventually became the President after the war. Around the corner is the cemetery where he is buried.
It was a great tour! Today, Troy took us on a tour of the Chamberlain House and asked us if there was any specific time period we were interested in. I requested his post-war period and my wife asked for insight into their domestic life. We learned Joshua Chamberlain was very futuristic and thought 2-3, even 4 generations ahead. He championed military readiness, co-ed college enrollment, and redemptive/reconciliation minded government. I highly recommend taking advantage of this great resource and the knowledgeable docents. Go out of your way to visit! During COVID, schedule an appointment
Great place! One of my favorite tour guides ever. Lots of info and interesting stuff. Would highly advise going
Very nice and helpful people here. Next time I"ll have time to take the tour. This is a must stop if you're in the area and even if you're not!
A wonderful Museum to learn about the life of General Joshua Chamberlain. Wonderful guided tours, where you can ask questions about anything involving his life. The home is a great overview of his life as a professor, an officer in the Army, and as governor of the state of Maine. I highly recommend going to this Museum if you wish to learn more about him.
I came here yesterday for a tour of Joshua Chamberlain's house, and it was a great experience. Honestly never really knew of him except for his burial site down the road. Our tour guide Troy was very knowledgeable, friendly and knew specific details about the house. Overall, Chamberlain seemed like a well-rounded man who had a heart of gold and cared deeply for his country. That I can respect, and I thank him for what he did. “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” ― Abraham Lincoln
This is a must-see for any history fan; especially fans of the Civil War. The home contains many artifacts belonging to the Chamberlain family and the tour is extremely informative. They also provide information for more Chamberlain related sites in the area.
I was there on Saturday 8/22/22. It was very nice, the lady that took us on the tour of the house was great. I wish that I could have talked more about chamberlain with her, she made me feel very welcome and now I just want to know more about this incredible man. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Glenn Lapointe From N.H
