Hot Springs State Park

Story

Hot Springs State Park is a public recreation area in Thermopolis, Wyoming, known for its hot springs, which flow at a constant temperature of 135° Fahrenheit. The state park offers free bathing at the State Bath House, where temperatures are moderated to a therapeutic 104°F. The petroglyph site at Legend Rock, some 25 miles away, is also part of the park. The park is managed by the Wyoming Division of State Parks and Historic Sites.HistoryThe land on which the state park sits was a cession agreement and the ceded portion was purchased from the Eastern Shoshone by the federal government in 1896, when Indian Inspector James McLaughlin negotiated a purchase price of $60,000 for a 100-square-mile portion of the Shoshone reservation. After a one-square-mile section of that land was released to the state in 1897, it became Wyoming's first state park, known at that time as Big Horn Hot Springs State Reserve.FeaturesThe park features a managed herd of bison, a suspension foot bridge across the Big Horn River, picnic shelters, boat docks, flower gardens, and terraces made of naturally forming travertine (calcium carbonate) caused by a flowing mineral hot spring. The park area encompasses commercial hotels and several state-run and privately operated entities including the Gottsche Rehabilitation Center, Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital, the historic Callaghan Apartments/Plaza Hotel, the Star Plunge waterpark, the Tepee Pools waterpark, and the Wyoming Pioneer Home, a state-run, assisted-living facility.

For a free service this is great. There is an outdoor and indoor hot spring that you can use for free. The changing facilities are not we'll kept up and do not provide much privacy.

great hot springs, really good fishing between wedding of the waters and the hot spring state park. Two different water parks, nice park for kids to play. bbq areas, nature walking areas, buffalo, deer, multiple hotels and places to eat within walking distance. my kids love coming here to swim and soak in the mineral water.

Three different hot pools, one free to the public -- but swim is limited to 20 minutes, which is sufficient. The state park has a car tour route and short hikes. Two motels within the state park boundary. Lots of things for kids to have fun.

Love the hot springs. Super pocket friendly and love the star plunge. Plus the buffalo drive is a must see. They also have tons of museums and fun things to do.
