Very caring staff, beautiful facility. Many volunteers with quite extensive training and skills who will exceed your expectations! Home cooking and treats, gorgeous grounds to stroll or take your loved one out to enjoy. Calm, peaceful and caring environment with excellent medical care and attention.
I want to thank the evening nurse Emily for supporting my Father-in-Law in his end of life experience. The room was beautiful, the care was exceptional. Emily was empathetic, explained everything that was happening, assured us as the end was coming, and made us feel safe. I cannot express how grateful we were to Emily. She was so respectful, kind, and informative. Thank you.
Our residents delivered a pie to the wonderful folks at Hospice Simcoe and they welcomed us with open arms. Thank you for your kindness on this day but also for the incredible support and role you play in our community. All of your team and volunteers were so kind!
Most incredible place to be with your loved ones. In their most vonerable moments. The staff are very caring and compassionate, helpful and kind. This is where I would want to be in my last moments. I was able to sleep and comfort my mom. The staff kept me hydrated and fed well. Food is incredible and homemade. I felt so at home. Thank you, Hospice Simcoe staff, nurses, psw, for having my back and looking after my mom.
I am distressed at the need to write a complaint to address the appalling and wilfully cruel treatment experienced by my dying mother at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie.nnTo be clear, the majority of the staff & volunteers of Hospice Simcoe were incredibly kind and helpful in my mother’s care. Truly. The majority demonstrated great care and compassion worthy of a five star rating. Unfortunately, the abusive behaviour of the night nurse RPN Sharon Gilbert, had devastating consequences to my mother’s end-of-life care.nnI am writing this in the hopes of warning and protecting future palliative residents and their family members from leaving her in their care.nnHospice Simcoe was supposed to be the gentle and compassionate option that we wanted to give our mother for her end-of-life care.nnI witnessed my mother’s death immediately after RPN Gilbert’s evening care. She refused to listen or take verbal or visual cues from either my mother HS palliative resident or myself that she was causing physical pain, distress, and damage to my mother’s carefully maintained medical stability. During the evening routine RPN Gilbert roughly handled my mother, causing a formerly mute patient to cry out in pain, and demonstrated mismanagement of her medications.nnWith this nurse, there was an obvious neglect of compassionate care, and the blatant absence of concern for the integrity and dignity of another’s life. Her actions robbed our family of what precious little time we had left with our mother.nnI strongly recommend you advocate for another nursing staff member for your loved one’s care. I have contacted Hospice Simcoe and the Ontario College of Nurses to make formal complaints so that her willful negligence is addressed and appropriate action is taken. I spoke with the director and asked for follow-up. I am disappointed thus far with the action taken and am hoping that this situation will be addressed with the seriousness it deserves. This is clearly not an ‘off day’ with this nurse.nnIn speaking with and observing several other Hospice Simcoe staff, it was made explicitly clear to me that there have been ongoing issues with this nurse for some time and it has not yet been appropriately addressed.nnI also am greatly concerned that RPN Gilbert was willing to behave as I have described with a family member present in the room ‘caring’ for a patient–I shudder to think of her conduct without any witnesses or accountability to her actions to her palliative patients.
