Story

The HI Ottawa Jail Hostel is probably the only jail in Canada you'll want to spend the night in! Formerly known as the Carleton County Gaol, this preserved heritage building guarantees a one-of-a-kind experience as you may spend the night in one of the former cells or take a tour of the 8th floor where death row inmates counted their last hours. Don't worry, we also offer all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay: a bar, a backyard patio, organized events, a kitchen, a FREE continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi access and much more.

Location is the best top 1000.nRooms and areas are okay like expected.nHad to wait 15-30min just to use each of the toilet, shower, sink. Washroom was so busy in the females floor had to take turns at night and morning!nPeople are friendly, my roommate stayed up all night with the lights on! not the best but glad it’s just a night.nBreakfast is okay. Check-in was easy, the staff is very friendly and helpful. Their luggage storage room is convenient. The atmosphere of being in an old jail is quite fun.nI stayed in an 8-bed dorm. The only negative part is that the beds have no curtains and the bathroom is outside the dorm.nLight sweet breakfast is complementary.nThe location is excellent. Anything to walking distance.nIf you stay, make sure to do the jail tour, it is such an interesting place.
Stayed in a four bed dorm, really appreciated that there was a female-only floor. The shower lock on our floor was broken, so did have to go downstairs. Could use another toilet. Beds were comfortable, blankets provided were too warm. It's an old building so extremely creaky, would recommend earplugs.nnFree breakfast, including bagels, fruit, and eggs. Luggage storage, which was very helpful. Hostel had several activities. Would recommend the free jail tour, Simon was fantastic and committed fully to the bit.
This was a truly unique experience, and anyone who loves Candian History, haunted places, or anything in between should stay here for at least one night. In all honesty, one night is all I could handle, because I'm not a heavy sleeper and I did not get much sleep due to the noise. Don't get me wrong though, it's not the hostel's fault... the jail was purposely built for sound to travel, and they can't control the volume of the guests that ignore the signs to be quiet. Just consider that a fair warning for everyone. Also realize this: the private rooms are small... incredibly small. They were jail cells in the 19th century, so they are going to be small. Also, this is a hostel, not a hotel... so don't expect luxury. Stay here for the experience, the atmosphere, or because it's cheap... don't stay here if you want a luxurious vacation. The staff are incredibly friendly, the interior is quite clean and well kept, and there's a free breakfast and a free tour every morning. Another thing to note, there is construction going on across the street right now Nov 2024, so just be aware.
3rd hostel I have ever stayed at and I attended boarding school; great location a taste of history. Well kept modern amenities, roomy, has lockers and showering facilities. Staff are kind and people staying mild mannered like seasoned travellers often are. Definitely want to stay again extended my stay as am apartment hunting nearby.
