We had a great time at Guzoo. Lynn and his family take amazing care of the animals. I am a huge animal lover and love that they care for injured, rescued and newborn animals. Where else can someone get the chance to interact with a baby cougar in a safe and caring environment. Thank you for all the hard work you do and for saving the animals. They look happier, healthier and are breeding more then any city zoo I've ever been too.
Those that one starred this place clearly have never cared for animals or really looked around the big city zoo's, heck half of the low scores with no comments are likely from the same person that has been harassing this place for the last few years. Yes there was a deer carcass in the wolves cage area - but what do you think wolves eat? I really like this place and found it a great way to teach children about animals. Yes, there is poop in the pens, shockingly, animals poop and most poop a lot! I didn't see any excessive piles of mess in any of the pens, all the animals look well fed and well cared for. I have been there a few times now, and will continue to support this place as long as I see that they continually are bettering it and taking good care of the animals.
I started volunteering at Guzoo to help the animals and I like to think I did. Their quality of life did get better , the animals greeted me , they knew me and I am thankful I was able to help them a more then others could. I am also thankful to have been able to lots of the experiences I had with the animals and with my kids with the animals. We had a lot of nice times at Guzoo and some not so nice experiences. The idea of Guzoo is a wonderful one but it was never at its full potential and in the end I think it was probably a really good thing for the Guzoo to have closed down. I will never forget the times I had there.
Here's the deal with the negative reviews. There is a group of people who want to shut down zoos. They Tried to get Lucy the Elephant removed from the Edmonton Zoo, and frequently advocate vegetarianism. I have met some of them, and the Guzoo is one of their favorite targets, as it is the largest privately owned zoo in Canada. I grew u in the area, and have been here hundreds of times. The Alberta Zoo Standards Committee has no problem with the Guzoo. There have been minor things over the years that as standards have changed, have needed to be been fixed, but these are quickly dealt with. The biggest complaints are two fold. One is injured animals. Talk to the owner of you see these. Chickens are a common injured animal, as they peck each other. Certain animals lose hair or horns at certain times of a year. There can be bleeding involved. The second issue I hear centres around dead animals in cages. You need to realize that this is a Farm. Goats, cows die, and other animals die. These animals are recycled by being fed to the wolves, etc. Neighbors bring in road kill to feed to the lions. This is nature. People raised on a farm do not have issue with the Guzoo. The people who have issues with the Guzoo are activists, people who do not understand the cycle of life.
This was the best zoo ever. I spend a great deal of my childhood here and have a ton of pleasant memories. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I learned and experienced a lot here. None of the animals here were mistreated. I was especially impressed with how they housed the chinchillas. The enclosure was situated so that guests could get a good look at them, but not disturb them. If they ever reopen I will support them 110%.
I just finished visiting Guzoo with my family and was delighted with the experience. Normally I don't write reviews but felt compelled to given that I went there with mixed feelings after reading the other reviews. It is truly unfortunate that a small, family run operation like this is under pressure from well organized special interest groups with recognizable names and connections claiming to be animal rights activists. Ultimately, those people are eroding public confidence in activism as, through well publicized fact manipulation, they are bullying Guzoo and worst of all, resorting to abuse of our public resources to serve their myopic agendas. If you are interested in having an interactive experience with the animals and would like to get a taste of what a lower key operation is like where people really care about their work then Guzoo is for you. If you want a highly publicized, expensive, crowded, hands off experience where there is always a gift shop, khaki clad employee, or food vendor nearby then stick to the city. Guzoo is a great place and if you want to support what they are doing, just show up, enjoy the experience and tell your friends.
This is nowhere to take your children. The animals live in filth and barren enclosures. Frequent dead animals are seen in cages and often rotting carcasses are strewn about. The stench of death is everywhere. There are safety concerns as well, as they allow people too close contact with dangerous animals. They do not conform to zoo standards and have lists of violations against them. Do not support this cruelty to animals and show your kids this is now how animals should live!
The Garbage everyone describes is the old bread and fruits/ vegetables used to feed the animals. It tends to be nicer then the 50% off stuff I buy at the Grocery store. The owner has a great relationship with the animals in his care. They really love him. Ask questions from him if you have concerns. Don't listen to the negative reviews from the PETA folks. they are campaigning to have this and all zoos shut down and are spamming their posts everywhere.
Guzoo is a great place to go if you want to see one of the worst zoo's in operation. I don't want to shut down all zoos whatsoever, I simply want Guzoo to take care of the animals they have, and be more concerned about their care and welfare. Instead they say nothing is wrong, call their critics terrorists and buy more animals. As a farm owner, I don't care how fancy the enclosures are, I care about them giving the animals at the very least the minimum of the 5 Freedoms, they are paramount to any zoo that operates in society today. The community of Three Hills, friends and those who do not care how substandard the zoo is are very protective of their "farm zoo" in Three Hills. On my last visit, there was garbage, month old caracasses approx and a huge amount of feces that had built up in all the carnivore's enclosures, the non carcass eating animals food was thrown on the ground, in winter there was no water available to the animals outside, only giant blocks of ice in their water dishes, that the animals have to lick for any water. The enclosures are dirty, especially the tiger and lion enclosure. Their male lion has had his own feces hanging from matts on his belly for years. Animals are routinely euthanized rather than given simple vet care. They breed uncontrollably, and allow the public even children to handle and play with dangerous exotic animals, such as non human primates that can easily pass diseases and pathogens to humans. Many dogs wander the zoo uncontrolled, taunting the lions, tigers and wolves by running around the fenced enclosures barking non stop at the zoo animals. The staff are mostly volunteers, of which have no formal training in zoology or ethology, and there is not nearly enough volunteers and "staff" to care properly for Guzoo's 500+ animals. This isn't a "vendetta" or a few animal rights activists complaining who want to shut down all zoos. The biggest voices calling for the zoo to be closed are simply animal lovers in Alberta who understand that when you put an animal in a cage for display, it needs a clean and safe enclosure, a lot of enrichment, a species specific diet, and be properly housed with access to fresh water at all times. All the issues and problems with this zoo are too long to list, do your research before you go and/or expose your children to this place. Look at both sides. This is an archaic way of forcing animals to live and unnacceptable for any zoo to operate in the 21st century. Go to Discovery Wildlife Park in Innisfail instead.
These people are animal hoarders. If you like the idea of PUPPY MILLS YOU WILL LOVE THIS PLACE. It is just plan dirty and sad. This place should be shut down and the animals given to better zoos. If you think this place deserves 5 stars you probably live in filth as well and feel right at home.
