Art installation as part of Come Up To My Room 2015. Juxtaposition of history and materiality of carpets to contemporary design and technology.

Story

Common Tread is an art installation by Sander Freedman, Riyad Bacchus and Andrey Chernykh. It is a project inspired by a carpet designers’ story of historical carpet design and craftsmanship in Nepal, India, and Iran. Whilst exploring the history and materiality of this trade, we are thrusted forward and deeper into this relationship with current design and technology. Bringing 2D design to a 3D installation allows for an intimate encounter with our perceptions and physicality while being enveloped in design with natural fibers and sustainable materials. Juxtaposing traditional principles of Oriental, Persian and Arabic patterns into an emergence of a new, contemporary one allows for a modern awareness based on historical ideology. Relating old and new both instills and develops our idea of a “common thread”.

I stopped by the hotel’s bistro for a drink and had a great experience. Ali, was incredibly kind and welcoming. He shared some interesting stories about the hotel’s history, which I had no idea about despite my love for old buildings. He even showed me some of his favorite spots and helped take a few pictures. The place has such a peaceful atmosphere, and the staff are wonderful. Definitely looking forward to visiting again!
Loved my stay here! The art! The friendly professional staff! The vibe! The covered parking less than 5min walk away!nBrunch was also delicious!nOne thing to note is that the front entrance does not appear to be wheelchair accessible and the elevator which was a cool experience as it is one of the oldest in Toronto is smaller. This is not an issue for my stay this time, but is worth noting for others. The hotel may have another entrance point that is more accessible that I was not aware of-something to look into further if needed.nnI look forward to my next visit!
The décor is absolutely charming, evoking a distinct vintage ambiance while offering all the modern comforts that matter. The staff is among the most exceptional I’ve encountered in my travels—not just friendly, but genuinely kind and caring, with warm smiles that made a difference to our group. Loved it!
We got married at Gladstone House in November 2024, and it was an absolutely incredible experience! We worked with Nina! The venue’s unique charm, artistic ambiance, and historic character made for the perfect setting. The staff was attentive, professional, and went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. From the beautifully designed spaces to the exceptional food and service, every detail exceeded our expectations. Our guests loved the intimate yet vibrant atmosphere, and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate our special day. Highly recommend Gladstone House for a stylish and unforgettable wedding!
I recently visited their cafe and wanted to share some feedback. I loved the atmosphere, location, color scheme, and cleanliness of the space.nnUnfortunately, my experience wasn't entirely positive. My initial beer was served in a cracked glass, and the replacement was not chilled.
