Story

History Of the German Canadian Cultural Association (GCCA)

The Club Edelweiss
The Club Edelweiss was founded in 1906 and represented the first German Club in Alberta. The Club received its statures from the Legislature. The members morally supported many newcomers after the First World War. The Club flourished and in 1928 a building was erected - mostly by volunteers. During the Second World War the Club had to close its doors but reopened again in 1953. For many immigrants this was the first and only "home away from home".

Phoenix Club
The Motor Club Phoenix was founded in December 1955. In 1957 they
bought property at Lake Isle and in 1958 the Club name was changed to the Phoenix Club and its focus had changed to a family club with many outdoor interests. The Phoenix Club brought the Oktoberfest to Edmonton - which is still very popular with the public.

Friends of Berlin
The Friends of Berlin Club was founded in 1963 by immigrants coming from Berlin who wanted to show their solidarity with the City of their forefathers, at that time surrounded and divided by a wall and isolated from the rest of Germany. The contact with Berlin has been kept very much alive, many delegations have visited here from Berlin. Unfortunately, the clubhouse burned down in 1982.

In 1983 The members of the Edelweiss Club, the Friends of Berlin and the Phoenix Club decided to form the new German Canadian Cultural Association. In 1983 the Club was founded by three well known German clubs, the Edelweiss Club, the Phoenix Club and the Friends of Berlin Club. These clubs felt the need to unite and to give the German-Canadian population a bigger and better facility. There was also a great need to accommodate the many smaller groups and give them a place to meet.

The service was great five stars and I had a great time, but the food was lacking. I was looking forward to a Gerrman Christmas dinner, but was dissapointed in dry stuffing, and a general lack of a theme between the different foods that were served together. A "meh" from me for food.
Staff are good and friendly. The place is a bit dated though. I understand heritage and all but it's a bit dark in places in there. All in all still a good place to hold an event.
Great good; venue is perfect for wedding receptions; banquets; business conferences etc. Very clean bathrooms; coat check available; friendly staff; excellent food
We went to the oktoberfest celebrations and it was lots of fun! We will definitely be back next year!
The GCCA was the perfect place to host my wedding. The hall comfortably seated 260 people. The buffet setup was great and everyone was eating in 30 minutes. The food was excellent and my guests especially loved the chicken schnitzel and roast beef. Tim was very helpful through the whole process. He was quick to respond to my questions and was able to accommodate my requests.
Hosted my father in laws 90th birthday here. It made party planning simple. The food was good. Accessibility for mobility challenged individuals was good. Staff were helpful and friendly from booking through the buffet meal to settling the bill. I would recommend it to anyone and will be back for supper some night soon.
We haven't been there in years. Went to Oktoberfest a few times. Had a blast. Great meal, friendly people and love all the cute door prizes. We went when the Emeralds played.
I am really surprised to see the quality of food rise so dramatically in the last couple of months. Last year, the restaurant was the usual bland fare one would normally expect at a buffet-style restaurant: tasteless, unimaginative, rubbery and either too cold or too hot and overcooked because of the steam ovens. I have had the opportunity to go back FOUR times this year 2015, and find their food has much improved since last year. It's still buffet service not much you can do about that, but the limited table service is friendly and helpful. food tables are better supervised, and the food is rotated more often to keep the try's full and fresh. The dishes consist of interesting, tasty and traditional German fare from all parts of Germany, and everything is well prepared. I had a German liver dumpling soup last time where the dumpling was light and fluffy, and the broth was delicious and ripe with flavour. The schnitzels are always tasty and delicious, the Bavarian meatballs are out of this world, and the salad bar is always freshly stocked and interesting. The food is overall very good, and the prices on both food and alcohol are extremely reasonable. You get definitely get your money's worth here! My only criticism is our that the room decor is a bit dated, and the desserts, while fresh and tasty, most often seem to come from Costco, but they do the main dishes very well now, and I recommend eating at the German club now to everyone I know who is looking for a reasonably-priced dining experience with fun people and excellent food.
Really nice place. I went for a dinner and dance party. There were definitely not enough chairs as we had to stand awhile until my gal pals boyfriend brought 2 chairs, especially for myself and my friend whom I was there with. I should mention that we were invited as our friends were doing a special dance for charity.
I was very disappointed with the lack of food and desserts from the Mother's Day brunch. There was not enough variety of food, most of it was cold and tasteless. Asking to restock the food, in both the brunch and dessert tables because there was no food...I shouldn't have to ask the work staff to replenish food.. having 3 pails of ice cream, melted on ice was really bad. Watered down orange juice and cold coffee/tea. I will never again spend 32.00 per person on a brunch that could of been a whole lot better elsewhere.
