I enjoy walking around the downtown area of Montreal. There are many places to go and see and especially just to hang out and have a bite to eat or just a coffee. This is a great spot to do just that if you’re not taking the train of course. It’s a nice clean station with lots of eateries and coffee shops.
In terms of convenience, this station is centrally located with underground access from metro and other areas. There are shops and restaurants, even a bakery. At the other end is a pick up area for taxi and Uber. The staff are friendly and helpful in both English and French. But ... Trains are always delayed with no reason given and even staff so not seem to know. Schedule trips earlier than you want to arrive since even on board trains can stop for other reasons. Arrive at least 30 minutes early as the lines can get really long.
Took the Via train twice roundtrip to Quebec, over 30 min late on the outbound, over an hour late on the return. Design flaw for the train means you have to walk through the crowd to get your luggage if you’re located on the end of the train from the sole luggage rack. Disappointing. I thought it would be convenient to take the train for a short two day trip to Quebec.
I have been to several train stations in Canada, and the one in Montreal is my favourite. Not only do you have access to numerous shops many food vendors, shoe store, car rental office, place to buy electronics, etc., but it also connects you to Montreal's famous underground city network. This truly is a model for how cities can incorporate train infrastructure into the daily life of their residents.
Despite this place being Downtown Hub where Subway, trains from local and outer region bring so many people of all ages and limitations, they always have multiple escalators not in service. Not only that, coincidentally they stops these escalators during heavy traffic side in morning and late afternoon. Here is an example, everyone arriving in morning, escalators going up is stopped, then late afternoon they stopped the opposite side to go down. This is almost everyday. No consideration for people with age and movement limitations.
