First Hebrew Congregation is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue in northern Westchester. Come visit us and find out why everyone thinks we're the friendliest congregation around!

Story

We are proud of our congregation's 100+ year history. We were founded in 1896!! In those days Jews lived near the synagogue, in downtown Peekskill. In the 1950's synagogue leaders determined that the future of the congregation lay in creating an egalitarian Conservative synagogue/center. They purchased land and built a building. We are proud that since its inception, the new congregation in its new building has been egalitarian - women and men have the same involvement in synagogue life. There is no gender distinction in roles.
Our synagogue offers a great Pre-School, 'Lil Sprouts, which offers a warm, supportive education and experience with dedicated teachers.
We also have a Hebrew School which brings our children to a love of everything Jewish - from prayer and Hebrew to learning about holy days, mitzvot, and doing tz'dakah and deeds of kindness.
Adults come to learn about Judaism's teachings on the issues of the day. We have active and involved Men's Club and Sisterhood with a breakfast and programs offered each month.
Our members are active in the community supporting the homeless shelter, daily Lunch Program for those in need, the local food pantry, and much more. In the fall we collect and give away winter clothing.
There are many engaging social activities throughout the year.
And informal learning is offered during services and at the Kiddush following our Shabbat service. Once a month we offer Torah Talk - an in depth conversation of the Torah reading of the day. And once a month we Focus on (the) Haftarah, learning about the inspired teaching of our prophets. Please stop in at First Hebrew and sample what we have to offer. We are friendly - and we offer so many ways in which you can celebrate being Jewish - in our community.

Products

We are an Egalitarian, Conservative Synagogue in Northern Westchester, NY. We are members of United Synagogue, have a Hebrew School and Hebrew High School Program. We also have a secular Pre-school/Daycare which meets the guidelines of OCFS and is housed in our building. We offer numerous Adult Education opportunities as well as Programs which appeal to a wide variety of interests - both, religious and secular.
