Super awesome people. Had non ethanol fuel for our bikes and hooked us up with cold water. Great stop when riding the SteensnnUpdate: lady on our first stop was excellent. Show up this morning after getting soaked in a random desert rain and want to sit with my buddy who just ordered 15 dollars in food at their empty at one of their picnic tables and eat a kiwi something they don’t offer inside. Even after spending over 80 dollars on fuel between the two of us I was not allowed to eat my outside food at their table and told to leave. What a joke.
My first experience here was wonderful! Came in on my moto on a decently warm day with some passing thunder storms to get a milkshake and boy it did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and the food smelled and looked delicious too. I would highly recommend this pot to get some gas and grub or stay at their lodging.
Been here quite a few times when passing through the area. Malts are great $11. Haven’t had the food lately but it’s been good when I’ve had it. They have gas. It’s expensive but they have to haul it in and if you need it, you’ll be damned glad they have it. They also have basics, booze and beer.nnThese folks need to be more friendly. Maybe the lady that rang up my gas was having a bad day but the vibe I got was that I was an imposition on her time. Again, maybe just having a bad day. I wouldn’t drive out of my way to go here but if you’re here you’re out of your way anyway.nnGot my gas and malt and hit the road.
On June 6, I was traveling west from HWY 95 to HWY 201 Fields-Denio Road via the Whitehorse Ranch Road when I registered an alert about low tire pressure. I was bummed out as it was already the end of a long day, it was 95 degrees and I was still about 12 miles from HWY 201. I limped into Fields and immediately received assistance and advice from Jake the owner. He provided me with a safe place in the parking lot that was flat piece of pavement in the shade for switching my tire, which was most welcome, as I had to unload all of my car camping gear. He also came by a couple of times to check on my progress, which was slow. Jake helped me figure out how to release my spare tire, which was a completely different system than my prior car and was not explained in the owner’s manual, ugh! Also, one of the staff ladies lent me a length of pipe out of the back of her pickup to provide enough torque for me to loosen a couple of recalcitrant lug nuts.nnMost importantly, Jake shared local advice, which helped me determine my next move. I had planned to overnight at Alvord Hots Springs, but he explained that was another 26 miles on gravel, not a good idea for the spare. Jake recommended that I head directly up HWY 205 to Les Schwab in Burns, which was 112 miles away. I followed his advice and made it! Before I left Fields I thanked the ladies in the store and asked if I could buy them a beverage of their choice as an expression of my appreciation. They politely declined, and said they were just happy to help, because that is what people do for each other in the Oregon Outback. I replied that I agreed, as I had learned during 20 years living in rural Alaska that the fewer the people, the nicer they are! The crew at the Fields Station General Store certainly demonstrated the pioneer spirit of people helping one another as well as traveling strangers. Stephen M. Waste, Ph.D.
Stopped in for fuel and milkshakes. It was a nice little stop and rest before continuing on our drive.nStaff was friendly. We BSed with them a little bit while they made our shakes. Cool place, cool people.nAdded bonus was an aircraft was refueling when we pulled up. It taxied up to the road, then took off heading to the Avoid Desert.
