Got the name of a state or city or a body part as a nickname? This is the place for you. Classic pool hall. Seven foot and eight foot tables. Eight and nine ball racks at every table. Decent to average house cues. Chalk vending machine. The tables are unlimited play by the hour and there are a few coin opp tables as well. Good selection of beer and spirits. Clean and well kept. Underground location adds extra cool factor. Big spacious room. Usually not busy during the week and busy on the weekends. Cash only with ATM on premises. Dart boards and table soccer, too. No food but the owner is cool and let's you bring in carry out from other places.
Spent 15 minutes waiting for the bartender at Fat Wally’s to come serve me before I gave up and left. He left the bar completely unattended for about 30 minutes, talking a young couple in the corner. Not to mention they were the ONLY other people in the bar besides us. Used to love coming here with friends/family and showing them the place but the service has definitely gone downhill. I’d take my tip back out of the jar if I could.
So fun! Pretty laid back during the week, then gets busy at the weekend. The owner Kurt, is a long-time bar owner since '82 I believe, is a very personable guy who knows his industry! He can give tons of historical info on establishments in Cedar Rapids downtown area.
Fat Wally's doesn't open until 6:00 p.m. A classic worn out pool hall in downtown cedar rapids. The tables are level but quite thread bare, many with drinks spilled on them. Bring your own cue because very few here are worth even trying to play with. No chalk cone to be found, extremely large roaches both guarding and inhabiting the men's bathroom. A good beer selection that's a little too warm even for English beer. Looks good, but enough disappointing factors to only give this place 2 Stars. Oh, the music was pretty good and not too loud, you could still carry on a conversation. Wally needs to raise his rates, recover the tables and get a few new sticks.
Go here at least once in your life to get the experience of a classic style pool hall. Then go many more times!
It was amazing. Old American pool hall with dart boards and foosball tables. Bring cash. No credit cards
Some of the pool tables are older and not great to play on, but it's a nice place overall. I've enjoyed my times there.
The pool tables are all in good shape, the cues are only decent, as you'd expect. They have lots of varied bottled beers from around the world. The liquor selection is well pours to slightly higher. The only downside is cash only, but they do have an on-site ATM now.
We were so excited to come down to Fat Wally’s! The bartender, Dan told us the ATM was broke so we felt so bad we couldn’t buy many drinks..after awhile Dan offered us our favorite drinks out of kindness. Stop by for awesome service!!!
I was here on Saturday, First off this place is cash only. There are no clearly visible signs or posting of this info. Like just a sign on the door would be perfect. The first I heard about this was after placing an order for a group of after he handed me my drinks and I tried to hand him my card. This was after standing waiting at the bar for almost 30 minutes as dude was helping patrons who were walking up after me, either way the bartender was struggling to fill a very small amount of orders. As someone who has bartended and will occasionally guest bartend still I was amazed that this was who is working a Saturday evening. After informing me of the cash only he pointed out the ATM as I’m putting my card in he shouts that I can’t use the ATM he just told me to use because it’s out of cash. Proceeds to tell me I need to walk 3 blocks to the next closest atm he knew of. On top of that the shots we ordered were made incorrectly, drinks are weak and the bottled beer is barely refrigerated because apparently “the cooler doesn’t always stay cold”. I have to re iterate again I have worked in pool halls, dive bars, bars in downtown Iowa city, bars in small towns. I understand how things work in this industry and I’m never critical of a business unless every aspect of it seems to be intentionally trying to tank the business.
