So nice to come back! Our daughter worked here while she was in college. Enjoyed fresh margaritas, good tacos, enchiladas and chimichangas. Yum!Food: 5/5
Had a wonderful meal at El Gato, the chips & salsa were fantastic along with our main course. Took Kathy out for dinner before the Al Stewart concert last night at El Gato Cantina. It was a fantastic meal, highly recommend it if you are on that side of the lake looking for a good meal out. Easy to find, it' right off 5 corners in Essex Junction on Main Street. Kathy swore beer off for Lent but it turns out Margaritas aren't beer, so they are allowed . Perfect timing too, Wednesday is $5 Margarita Night ! Kathy is always designated drinker , I'm designated driver
Terrible food and service. Moe's is loads better. My food literally tasted like feces. The offending meal was the Chicken Pollo tacos, which are usually safe. I couldn't even finish one taco. I brought a family of 7 in for dinner. It took the waitress over an hour to take our dinner order and we were there two hours before we got our bill. I have heard direct testimony from summer employees who work there that the kitchen is not sanitary and there is poor quality control. That was reflected in the poor taste, aroma, and quality of our food.
Drinks were great, but small. Queso is very thick. Everything was made fresh.Food: 5/5
The food here is excellent and normally I would give it five stars. I know people are understaffed and we were willing to be patient. They let us know up front. No problem. Our waitress was not really a waitress and she abandon the table. Many people walked by us and never said anything. We kept trying to get attention. We piled empty glasses at the end of the table. We tried everything. No one would look at us. Finally when we went up to ask for service she let us know she was not our waitress. We paid the bill and left without eating. I understand what happened but all someone had to do was acknowledge us and communicate and we would have stayed. The place was busy so I am sure they will survive without my business but was the worst disregard for customer service I have experienced in a long time.
To start, I work at a restaurant, so I don’t wanna be that guy, I know how it is and how hard of work it is. This all being said the reviews about the service and exorbitant wait times were accurate, I went in on a Sunday night, not busy when we got there tho it picked up as we waited a whole 45 minutes for our food. The food was pretty good tho definitely not worth the wait. Our server was nice however only visited the table a total of 3 times, once to take our drink and food order. Once to check on the food, then again for the check. I had to ask a host for a refill on drinks and they got part of my girlfriends order wrongasked for no cilantro yet got some anyways. Overall it wasn’t amazing by any means of the word but it wasn’t horrible as the food was actually pretty good. But with on tap next door, this restaurant should really up its game.
Worst tostadas ever. First the order came out wrong with black beans instead of refried. After the second attempt the refried beans was the size of a hamburger patty and forgot the beef I added. Had to ask for a second drink after I had finished my water and lemonade and waited 20 min with two empty glasses. My meal ended up comped but would not recommend.
El Gato has the best Mexican food and margaritas I’ve ever had, hands down! My favorites are the carnitas tacos, tostada with refried beans, chips and salsa or queso or guac and, of course, the famous margarita menu. I do miss the pozole! Make sure you don’t miss $5 margaritas on Wednesdays - it’s an amazing deal. Also, catch the El Gato food truck out and about at local events. Top 3 restaurants in Vermont, no question! Solid A.
I was surprised the house margarita is now $10… most places they’re $7 or $8. Your prices have gone up a lot. I had the taco platter and it was $18 and definitely overpriced. The tacos were nothing to write home about and the fried beans and rice were okay.
Quality of food is poor despite prices that suggest otherwise. I couldn’t eat my burrito that didn’t even have cheese in it???. It was quite literally thrown to together and was flavorless. $18 for perhaps the worst “Mexican” food in the northeast.
