About:
About Empowerment for members for mental health and wellness. Story People for Equal Partnership in Mental Health (PEP) is made up of a cross-section of people who either have used or are currently using mental health services. The use of mental health services can range from help received at home, to help received at Psychiatric and General Hospitals. What these people have in common is the fact that they have lived with the difficulties, frustrations, and stigma that comes with a psychiatric diagnosis. PEP was formed on April 4, 1990, when a group of individuals with mental health concerns, encouraged by the Patient Advocate of the North Bay Psychiatric Hospital, came together to address common goals. PEP aspires to encourage and empower individual with mental health concerns to participate in the planning, management, evaluation, and delivery of their mental health services, PEP works to: •encourage peer support •establish self-help groups •support and advocate on behalf of one another •sponsor and organize educational opportunities related to mental health issues and services •encourage all individuals with mental health concerns to participate in planning, management, evaluation and delivery of mental health services •work with professionals and the community towards developing a better understanding of people who cope with mental health issues •network with other peer initiatives across the province and the country •make presentations to the government for the enactment, repeal or amendment of legislation dealing with mental health issues Student placements work with the members and staff of PEP and are a large part of the support team. They come from a wide variety of educational institutions, including: Nipissing University Social Work Program, Canadore College, Nursing, Social Service Worker, and Drug and Alcohol Counselor Programs, Canadian Career College, Personal Support Worker Program, Adult Learning Centre Business Course, YES Employment, Ontario Works and Ontario Secondary Schools. Mission People for Equal Partnership in Mental Health (PEP) recognizes the innate dignity and worth of each person. This belief directs our efforts to assist persons who have experienced the trauma of mental illness to reach their fullest potential as citizens of this community. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
