Federally Qualified Health Center

Story
Lorain County Health & Dentistry has long and deep roots. The organization began in 1968 as an outpatient department, at the former St. Joseph Hospital, to serve low-income, pregnant women and children. In 2002, with support from the Lorain hospital, a new, independent, private, non-profit organization was formed to replace the hospital department. In 2005, the organization became known as Lorain County Health & Dentistry (LCH&D) when general dentistry services were added. 
In 2009, LCH&D achieved Federally Qualified Health Center status, recognition of both quality and commitment to serve the most vulnerable population. In October 2010, LCH&D was awarded a competitive Federal grant to renovate a vacant building at 1205 Broadway in Lorain to serve as the health center’s main Lorain location. The building, owned by the health center, opened in May 2013 and provides a significant expansion opportunity for both new services and new patients over the next several years.  
LCH&D also opened, in 2013, its third location, a satellite medical clinic in Elyria, with funds awarded as a result of a competitive grant process to expand health center sites, and increase patient access, in neighborhoods all over the country. A full-time vision clinic began operations at the Broadway site in October 2013 filling a great need. LCH&D will open a medical facility in an Elyria public housing site in 2014, initially offering pediatric care. In 2016, LCH&D opened its newest site in southern Lorain County, in Oberlin.

Products
Prenatal care, gynecology, pediatrics, family and internal medicine, integrated behavioral health care, optometry/eye care, podiatry, asthma/allergy care, general and pediatric dentistry, and enabling services including outreach and community support, interpretation/translation, and assistance with transportation.

For added convenience and affordability, LCH&D contracts with (3) local Walgreens to provide its uninsured patients significantly lower pricing on prescriptions. And, through LabCorp, the health center offers onsite phlebotomy/lab services.
