About:
About Mount Hope Cemetery is the final resting place of many of Rochester’s pioneers and leaders, and is enjoyed by the community as a cherished green space. Story Mount Hope, as the nation’s first municipally-owned Victorian cemetery, is one of the most remarkable cemeteries in America. The dramatic topography formed by glacial forces provides its most striking character-giving features. The thousands of monuments and other man-made structures added since its opening in 1838 has resulted in a stunning 196-acre outdoor museum. Today, Mount Hope continues to be an active cemetery as well as Rochester’s most unique and valued green space. Four seasons of splendor offers a peaceful oasis to Mount Hope visitors, as well as to the 350,000 permanent residents, who include Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. A sought after destination for photographers and history buffs, Mount Hope is listed in the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places as part of the local Mt. Hope/Highland Preservation District and the National Parks Services’ National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
