Afework Girmayie and Helen Woldemichael are both Eritrean but they met in Greece. Later they moved to Canada, where they opened the East African Cafe. With the assistance o two staff members, Helen prepares all the food served in the establishment, including the always-fresh Injera Bread. Afework works up front in the cafe, greeting guests customers, delivering food to tables, and making everyone feel welcome. The couple established the East African Cafe because they wanted to create an inviting space where Kitchener Waterloo's East African community could gather and enjoy traditional foods, and where people who have never been to Africa could experience the cuisine of one of the oldest cultures on Earth. Their venture has been successful: visit the restaurant any time of the day or evening, any you'll hear convivial conversations taking place in African languages such as Amharic, and Arabic alongside families happily chatting in English about the day's events. The East African Cafe is as multicultural as it is delicious!
