Earl Haig Secondary school

Story

Earl Haig Secondary School is a public high school with a student body of about 2,200 students in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In addition to being a public secondary school, the school is also host to The Claude Watson Arts Program, an auditioned arts program integrated into the secondary school curriculum.HistoryThe school is named after Field Marshal The 1st Earl Haig, who was commander of the British Expeditionary Force during the majority of the First World War. The school was established in 1928, shortly after the Earl Haig's death. The original school was designed by the Toronto architectural firm of Craig and Madill and construction started in November 1929. The building officially opened in 1930 as Earl Haig Collegiate Institute. Additions continued through the 1940s, 50s and 60s. In 1961, the school changed its name from Earl Haig Collegiate Institute to Earl Haig Secondary School. It is currently the largest high school in the Toronto District School Board. The Claude Watson Arts Program began in 1982. The program consists of dance, drama, music, film arts, and visual arts.In 1996, the original building was demolished in sections to make way for a new building. This new building was designed around the original auditorium, Cringan Hall. Carruthers Shaw and Partners Limited, the same company that designed buildings at Queen's University and Upper Canada College, designed the new building and Bondfield Construction were contracted to build the school. The new 310000sqft building was officially opened in September 1997 at a cost of CAD$30,800,000.

A private school with a bunch of people that think they are the best because the school is in the top 5 best schools in Canada. Only way to get in is to audition and be the very best or have multi million dollars to live close to the school.
I just graduated from this school. The building is rly nice/modern looking and the school got a lot of money comparing to some other schools in the TDSB. There are lots of opportunities like clubs and councils. The electronics in this school are so bad so idk where the money rly goes.. at least they got the ac working now. Took me like 20 min to log into the computers in the library.
Used to go here from 2009-2012. Amazing high school in so many ways. Really strong arts program with inspiring and passionate students practicing their craft, had the pleasure of seeing many great performances in arguably the best high school auditorium in the city. Many clubs and councils to choose from, some of which go above and beyond with their events and activities. Great selection of unique classes such as beauty class with hair and makeup and very clean and modern halls. Neighbourhood also offers a lot in terms of food, entertainment, and parks. Teachers can be hit or miss but thats the case for every school in the city. I wasn't into arts before coming here but some of my favourite memories ended up being art related animation and film projects, classical guitar performance, etc. Anyways if you go here today, realize its a privilege and treat the school and the students accordingly.
Still go here for another year until I graduate 2018-2022. There are some really good teachers that you connect with, and of course some that you really don't like. This school has a lot of students, lots of pushing and shoving near the second floor to get to your classes. Multiple opportunities available, over 60 clubs and councils. The school and art events are amazing. Art Gallery is probably my favorite place to wander the halls. Hope to be in person again.
Arts, academics, sports, clubs, staff and student support, opportunities from club-wide to the international level, access to public transport, weird kids of all ethnicities and clothing choices for you to befriend... what else do you need? Remember kids school is what you make of it and this place has A LOT to offer.
Very nice highschool. I recommend you try out for as many sports teams as possible. The coaches within this school are phenomenal. Big Pat on the Back to Mr E. James. Excellent to be in the Claude Watson Program. Lots of courses to offer, and guidance is good. The schools majority of students are of the Asian or Western community. The Neighbor hood is good, and shops nearby offer supplies. One thing though. Very overkill with COVID-19 protocols. I have to do a dang QR code EVERYDAY. If I don't do the QR CODE and enter the school, the principal yells over the PA. Its understandable, but a bit unnecessary. I'm very glad that sports are back, and the program is resuming to normal. The current 2 week rotation system is a bit wack. Unfortunately, due to some leader in the TDSB, they came up with a system of having courses rotate through week. For example: Semester 1 timetable could be WEEK 1: MATH/ENGLISH. WEEK 2: GYM/SCIENCE. The month rotates through week 1/week 2. Its difficult as teachers give loads of homework. Although the school has some flaws, I would say overall a very lovely school with a excellent environment. Very clean. Good luck to anyone who goes here.
I heard bad things about the teachers in this school as well. Most schools around this area don't offer strong support against bullying.
It's a good school. Teachers are friendly, most staff are ready to help you out and teach. The library would be my favorite place in the school. It has a great collection of books, comics, and reading materials to help you get through assignments and the day. The computer lab is decked out with nice computers. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to fully experience my Grade 12 senior year here, so that would be my only regret. 2020, year of COVID-19
The hygiene at school was poor and I had been bullied by my classmates and locked in the toilet. I asked my teachers for help, but I was still ridiculed and rejected by my classmates.
I attended what was then Earl Haig Collegiate Institute from 1951 to 1956 yes when grade 13 still existed!. The school then had about 1,100 students and the building was nowhere near the size or beauty of the present structure. It was a tough curriculum - in grade 13 I had a course load of 9 subjects that included 3 math, 2 science and 2 foreign languages. I recall there were 9 classes when I entered 9th grade but only 3 or 5 when I reached grade 13. It was a no-nonsense, solid learning experience and I am appreciative of my time there. I was fortunate to have taken grades 7 & 8 in one year so I was only 17 when I graduated from Earl Haig. I encourage all current and future students to make the most of your time during your high school experience. It will affect the rest of your life. Don't waste it!
