I love this place for keeping the kids entertained and their minds engaged. It small but there's more than enough for them to do. I like this size vs. the downtown Chicago children's museum because it's more manageable and not super crowded. We've been a few times and the kids want to stay for hours and hours. Be sure to bring another set of clothes as the water section is the most popular section for the little ones.
It's more of an exploratory play area for kids than a museum. Mostly targeted for kids under grade 2 and KG kids would have great fun. It's a very colorful setup and it would take around 2-3 hours to cover it. There's crafts area, carpenters area, water area would be very engaging for kids. The second floor is more a display section with less activities than the first floor. Better if you can book the tickets prior visiting. Masks are not mandatory but preferable.
Very clean and well kept by literally an army of employees and volunteers. I was worried about the hygiene before I went there, considering we were in the middle of the pandemic. Consider myself converted. The surfaces are cleaned often, and everything is in top condition. The mechanics area provides a lot of opportunities to explore, art workshop up to date with all needed supplies, the woodworking workshop is a ton of fun, and maintain the expected security and safety guidelines. Then comes the water, air and electric sections. Is highly recommend taking a backup pair of dress for the young ones. Considering the fun they were having, I didn't feel like stopping them from splashing the water and getting all wet from the water stream and the bubbles. I had a lot of fun. My kid did too
The children’s museum was the perfect recommendation from one of our friends who lives in the area. Our girl absolutely loved the first floor of interactive hands-on exhibits. Museum is large enough where no one area felt over-crowded and diverse enough to hold interest of our young ones. Ihighly recommend this museum.
Lots of fun for little ones. Geared more towards 5 and under but my 8 year old still had fun! The water table was the biggest hit for all ages! They had smocks to help keep the kids keep dry as well as a wind tunnel next to it just in case.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
So much fun. The staff is great and there is so much to do especially on a cold winters day. Note that they close at 4 m-thurs. give yourself at least 2-3 hours to see it all.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
This place is so much fun and there's so much to do. We've been once, bought the membership bc there's no way you can cram the whole experience into just one visit! Multiple areas for non-walkers to play in, amazing water room, craft room, woodshop, we haven't visited the Cafe but there's one located in the basement. I love watching them explore, my kids are 1 and 3 and every corner we turned they were in awe! Had to pull my 3 year old out of the dark room haha he didn't want to leave! Upstairs you can create your own gallery, there's a floor piano to run on, another space for babies. We can't wait to go back. They also offer $5 Friday nights during September and October and on those nights are open from 5-8! Masks optional, staff seems to mostly wear them though.
If you’re a parent who normally gets overwhelmed or worried when taking the kids out this will be life changing. This place is the ultimate little kids 8 and under friendly activity. I prepared myself for just kid madness prior but all of the stations are so good the kids are busy exploring/ expressing themselves. We took our newly 3 and 5 month old on a weekday around noon. No line and easy parking. We bought our tickets prior and strolled right in with zero line. There was a giant free locker/ coat area. All of the workers were pleasant and helpful. We hit up the cafe for lunch mid way. It was surprisingly not busy and clean. The extremely patient, pleasant and thoughtful worker took our orderagain no line. Lots of great simple fresh options for just about any taste. Cost about $35 plus tip option for lunch for 3. Which for the convenience was worth it. Other random positive notes it’s LGBTQ+ friendly, lots of benches, easy to navigate a stroller and breastfeeding friendly. We will be going back very very soon.
Nice place over all. Good for kids starting to learn about science. My smarter kids got board fast, my younger kid can spend hours playing with the same things. CON. Metal support are not cover in case kids run into things.Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Price for adult entry$11–15
Our 2-year-old grandson especially enjoys playing at the water table here, so we bought an annual family membership. However, each time we've been recently the place has been jam packed with multiple bus loads of older kids on field trips from the local school districts. These large groups race through the museum, crowding into areas that are designed for younger children, jostling little ones aside. During these times the noise level is horrendous! It's difficult to discern the educational purpose of these field trips. The older kids move quickly in groups from one activity to another without any sustained engagement, and there's no apparent effort being made to focus their attention on anything. They just overwhelm the place, making it unsuitable for younger children and miserable for the adults who bring them. We've asked if there is a schedule of these field trips posted so we can avoid them, but there doesn't seem to be. Nor does the museum seem to designate days for individual memberships when groups are not allowed. This is unfortunate since the museum is otherwise such a great place.
