A Chillingly Beautiful Road Trip – Dettah Ice Road & Yellowknife SightsnnTook a quick taxi trip to the Dettah Ice Road, a simple yet unforgettable experience. Driving across the frozen north arm of Great Slave Lake felt surreal—an iconic northern adventure you can only experience in winter. The vast, icy expanse made for stunning photo opportunities, and the crisp air added to the magic of the moment.nnI stopped by the evolving Ice Castle, still under construction on March 1, but its intricate structure was already impressive.nnIf you're in Yellowknife during winter, this short trip is a must for unique scenery and an authentic feel of the North! It is a matter of minutes from Yellowknife to get on the ice road, visit the castle and see the unique marvel of the road that connects Yellowknife to Dettah First Nation.
It's fun to say. Let you drive across a lake that's frozen get out of your vehicle and see how thick the ice is. Luckily, the roadnIt's not very long so you can't get lost, but there is a small town at the end of the road, and as you're driving across the frozen lake, you'll drive past a bunch of houses that are floating.nOn the lake but frozen in. Off to the side of where you drive, you'll see a ice palace. It's that they build every year. What's a bunch of ice sculptures that is really cool to experience from competitors around the world that curve these ice sculptures
It is a giant frozen lake in early March when we visited. Lots of fun for our 10 year old who has never seen snow before. Less fun for this old fart who was dragged along.nnI saw people driving across the lake in their vehicles. Also saw lots of tracks from various off road vehicles too. There is a park nearby to stop at and get set up if you want to trek out on foot.
Great experience driving on this frozen ice road. The visuals are stunning and exciting. Do not miss it when you visit Yellowknife in winters.
Its beautiful. Would recommend goin on a slightly warmer day to enjoy the views from outside the car. Its a very wide road with 45 km/hr speed limit.
