Danish Pastry Shop

About

A Danish bakery that has been serving the Pape Village for over 50 years.

Story

Hansen's Danish Pastry Shop has been an East York fixture for 50 years. We are a small family-owned bakery with a reputation throughout Toronto and Ontario for providing quality, hand-made Danish pastries and products. What we can't make in-house (cheeses, meats, fish, and preserves), we import from Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. We do all of this to offer a unique bakery experience with a traditional northern European flavour.

My grandmother took me here. In one of the photos that shows the railing. I'd be shorter than it and peering over to see the selection of danish and other pastries , cookies , sweet and savory choices. These pictures were taken at the end of the day. Usually the front window is full of choices. Highly recommended as it's a true secret
So I was missing home and Ontario's Greatest Buttertart Festival so I went for a walk with my service pup.tied up in her stroller we were on the hunt for East York's Best Buttertart. Sad to say I stopped here. After explaining that my dog was a service pet to the rudely toned lady that was looking outside with her hair loose over the food. I bought 7 buttertarts 2 date squares 2 Jamaican brownies and 1 Nanaimo Bar... 32$ later 1. Nanaimo bars2.89 a piece should be refrigerated. This poor thing was legit melting by the time I made it the 5 minutes walk from home and was warm in the middle so no refrigeration. The base was overly crumbly. Again due to the lack of moisture the refrigeration process would provide and the wrapper it was sitting on was greasy. 2. Buttertart2.89 a piece.... They are supposed to be crunchy in the middle. Yes I only ordered the original there were crystalized sugar chunks in my tarts. The pastry lacked flavour. My guess would be it was straight shortening used and not a butter lard mix which creates the best flavour. The bottom of the tart was also very soggy. It should have the same flakiness as the rest of the crust. And the center had a really off flavour. Now back home during the festival and at the bakeries I can get 6 tarts for 6$ 12 for 12. And when I say I have tried Ontario's best I have. This is not it. These are not good at all. As for the other two things I purchase I will test those or get the hubby to tonight. But I can guarantee I will not be returning. There has got to be a bakery comparable to the ones we get at the festival
Love these vanilla custard buns not sure if it's the real name!! The light, round puff is filled solid with a delicious custard. Always brings back great memories of my first job which was where I was introduced to these buns. A social worker colleague would bring them regularly for our Friday treats. Whenever I pass this bakery I can't help but stop for one, or two!!
Adorable party shop with tasty goodies that are perfectly presented. We had the chocolate balls that tasted like maraschino cherries/amaretto. They were rich and delicious. Even my boyfriend loved them and he doesn't generally love sweets. Looked super clean!
Everything is stale, there are flies flying around open cookies. The girl working there is terrible at her job, totally miserable. My kids and I asked a couple of questions about the cookies like a common what is in it but she rolled her eyes and didn't even fully answer the question. Overall a zero!
Cheddar biscuits are so good. Also the chocolate chunk cookies. I bought a few other things and everything has been delicious. I don't like in the neighbourhood anymore but when I do come to the city, I always stop in
Love this bakery. So much selection and everything I've tried is delicious. It's my go-to place for heavenly delights!
My husband and I have been here a number of times and have enjoyed everything we've had. Our favourite pastry shop to go to for quality and price.
