I’m not a big beef eater, so Cumbrae’s isn’t usually a regular stop for me, but my son told me about their chicken sandwiches, so we stopped in today to grab lunch.nWe placed a somewhat complicated order with a few substitutions, and a fantastic employee, one of the chefs we later found out his name was Daniel, came over to clarify everything. We watched as he went back to the team and walked each person through their role in executing the order properly.nHis customer service, teamwork, and attention to detail carried right through to handing us the food. We were genuinely impressed by the level of care he showed, you don't see this very often. And the sandwich was excellent!
I heard a lot of great things about the quality of meat from this place, so I happened to be in the neighborhood and dropped in. I wasn’t aware that this was actually a small takeout/sit in lunch restaurant as well as having a deli counter. I would best call it an Italian-ish. Grocery store since they have many packages of priest, sliced Italian salami and small antipasto and jars of Italian inspired products. I’m not sure if any of the deli meats are actually from Italy but they definitely screams artisanal. Aka overpriced!nI’ll be honest with you this place really is best described as bougie. Well, the quality of the meat seems quite high, and you can see that they’ve got dry each meat behind the counter. They also have a lot of products which are quite readily purchased throughout the city. I came by a large collection of pickles, which I had purchased a number of months ago at Walmart believe it or not. It was an all Canadian brand pickle. At Walmart this was around four dollars to five dollars for a large jar but here it was $14.99. And that’s just for a jar of pickles. The store itself is pretty interesting and has a unique vibe to it reminiscent of an open air market with high ceilings, sort of like St. Lawrence market with the more rustic chalkboard listing of takeout or even eat in options. The pricing for this place I guess is keyed to the neighborhood and the ability for the people here to pay for it. But I do think most people are aware of the fact that the vast majority of what they’re selling is a commodity and is readily available at many locations for much lower prices. The takeout food is 20% above the market itself with the Smashburger being around $17. The chicken sandwich is the price of two or three rotisserie chickens you can buy from the grocery store just down the street in fact. Like I said, this place reeks of bougie.nUPDATEnI happened to be in the area and I had a number of people tell me that Cumbraes make some amazing burgers so I decided to give them a shot even though I knew that the fast majority of their stuff is very expensive. Since they’re well known for their meat. I tried their burger. It is a freshly made burger and definitely comes on a very nice bun and you do get a fair amount of meat, but it had this funky sauce with a weird flavor to it, but I wasn’t keen on the sauce They put orange colored cheese on it, which I would think given the high quality atmosphere that they’re trying to portray they would use real cheese not just fake orange cheese. I also ordered fries which are fresh cut and hand cut. These were quite disappointing since they were barely warm and I would best characterize them as fish and chip shop chips or perhaps a chip truck chip. Minus the fresh hot texture. There’s not a lot of places to sit there and if you do want to go to the washroom to wash your hands you’re gonna have to use the employee washroom, which was a little weird. So this is not really designed for people to eat there. I would say if you’re interested in a burger and fries your best to look elsewhere since after a $17 burger and six dollar fries you’re cruising at $25 for basically a burger and fries. So no real value, but if money is no issue for you and you may find this appealing in a pinch. The burger and fries I would give six to a seven out of 10. For the amount you pay it’s just not worth it.
We stopped by for a quick bite and I absolutely loved this spot. They have an amazing selection of beef, deli items, olive oils, snacks, sandwiches, and more.nnI tried the burger with fries and the bacon sandwich—both were juicy and delicious. The kale salad was also really fresh and flavorful. Definitely coming back to try more!
I stopped by Cumbrae’s recently and was really impressed! The store has such an amazing variety — you can find just about everything from fresh produce to high-quality meats and cheeses. I picked up lamb chops, rosemary, Brussels sprouts, salami, ground chicken, and cheese, and everything was super fresh and great quality.nnIt’s definitely the kind of place where you can grab both everyday essentials and special ingredients for a nice dinner. The staff was friendly and the shop itself is very organized. I’ll absolutely be going back!
It's not enough to be a butcher shop, it has to be complete.nnCumbrae’s is the perfect establishment to find good pieces of meat, seasoned meats, roast meats, ready-to-heat pasta, cigars, different styles of cheese and desserts.nnProducts are of excellent quality and service is also of the same quality from all employees.nnThe store is super beautiful and you can order snacks and enjoy them in the store.nnThe store does not have many barriers, so it has good internal access for wheelchair users and customers with other disabilities, but it does not have an automatic door that greatly helps with entry and exit. The team is trained to serve all customers.nnFor those going by bus, you can use 11a or 14, both of which pass in front of the establishment. The place is pet friendly, with indoor tables during spring, summer and autumn, so you can wait with your pet, and there is always a pot of water for them.
