Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School

Story

Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School is a high school in the downtown section of New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1983 as a joint venture of New Haven and Hamden, it was originally known as the Hamden-New Haven Co-op. It was originally housed at the former site of Larson College at 1450 Whitney Avenue in Hamden .In 1988, Hamden left the project, and the Co-op moved to the former St. John the Baptist School at 800 Dixwell Avenue in New Haven. There they were joined by the Center for Theater Techniques in Education which incorporated the arts into the academic curriculum already offered. The name was officially changed to Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School. In 1990, the Co-op moved to the former St. Mary's High School building at 444 Orange Street in New Haven. They remained there until January 2009, when they moved to their current location at 177 College Street. The new building, designed by architect César Pelli, is a 60000sqft, $73 million state-of-the-art facility which includes a television studio, 350-seat theater with fly loft, black box theater, chorus and music rooms, 4 fully equipped computer labs, and academic facilities.Co-op is an arts magnet school that allows students to intensely practice their art major throughout the day, including music, theatre, creative writing, visual arts, and dance.

My oldest daughter started Coop in 2013 in the 9th grade, this is going to be her senior year fall 2015 and 2016 summer she will graduate. It has been a very exciting journey with my daughter in this school. She has grown and has showed so much progress....the teachers have done so much to keep her on task and for that I am grateful. Ms." L" I know it was a hard year for you and my daughter but you work your tookus off for your Class, a big thank you. I was always greeted at the entrance to the school with a friendly face from security to the front office staff and the teachers and principal that is often moving around in the building. It is a beautiful building and a great atmosphere to grow in. I remember once experience where my daughter was being bullied and I went into that building very angry......and spoke with the front office staff and they quickly made me feel that I was going to be taken care of and they were going to make sure they gave me priority. They quickly ask the principal to come down and he was the most attentive to my words and it was handled in about one week, he personally called me and assured me it was taken care of and how it was handled. since nothing like that has happened again. I have one more Daughter to go in this school and she too is blossoming in this space call Coop high school, she is becoming a lot more outgoing an A student. They both speak highly of their teachers and even the ones that make them work they still have good things to say about them. I just want to say thank you to everyone that has touched my children's lives, this was the best opportunity for my girls . May God go with you and keep you.
