Como Park Zoo & Conservatory

About

Mission: "To inspire our public to value the presence of living things in our lives.”

Story

One of the last FREE zoos in the United States, Como is home to a wide array of animals and plants and welcomes visitors 365 days a year. Located right next to Como Town Amusement Park, Cafesjian's historic carousel, and Como Park, the Zoo and Conservatory are great fun for visitors of all ages.

Some of Como's main attractions include a world-class polar bear exhibit, Polar Bear Odyssey, which opened to the public in 2010. The exhibit is home to the zoo's twin polar bears Buzz and Neil and features over 13,000 square feet of outdoor habitat. The zoo is also home to a collection of large cats, hoofstock, wolves, birds, primates, gorillas, orangutans, seals and sea lions, and several other aquatic animals. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory features six indoor gardens and several outdoor spaces, displaying thousands of beautiful plants each year. Beautiful regardless of the season. Went there with family & didn't want to leave. Many people were taking pictures. Even with my flip phone camera, I couldn't take a bad picture. The beautiful fauna, flowers and landscaping were subtle but breathtaking, almost jungle-like. 100's of microcosms. A delightful afternoon's journey. Wish I could name the flora I featured in the pics below. It is beautiful tho.

The Conservatory is beautiful!!! It is Such a great place to go hang out in the winter! There is warm and fresh air with a ton of beautiful unique plants! I instantly felt better when I walked inside!! It has a very relaxing environment. The conservatory is a great place to meditate! I highly recommend getting out of the winter cold and going to checking it out!

I was very frustrated with the Como Zoo. We are MN Zoo members but decided to switch it up this weekend and tried out the Como Zoo. We have two toddlers in a double bob stroller. For those that know what this stroller looks like- it looks BIG, however it fits through any space that is handicap accessible. My frustration was the lack of handicap doors! I met a friend there, another mother with two toddlers and it was a hassle to get into exhibits because we had to take turns pushing our kids through the door while holding the door open. In addition a few exhibits had stairs to get down to see different areas and a small handicap elevator, not worth the time to try. We decided to try the Cafe, and once again the layout with impossible to maneuver. In hindsight one of us should of gone up to order while the kids sat at a table because our strollers irritated everyone, including ourselves. Last, the family bathroom at the entrance is so small and connected by a hallway that could barely fit the strollers again! We tried to enter the conservatory but quickly gave up because in each section we had to open the doors again. I understand that having a side by side stroller vs front and back can have its challenges but never would I expect to face this challenge at a zoo....I would assume this is a family friendly environment but realistically it is geared towards older children that can walk. This zoo is not set up for strollers unless you bring a companion who can open all the doors, order food and bring one child at a time to the bathroom. The HIGHLIGHT of the zoo was the carousel. The staff was awesome and engaging, the music was great and the length of time of the ride was one of the best I have been on.

Great zoo and botanical garden. Lots of animals with a close-up view. They have polar bears , seals and penguins too. And it's all free . You can pay some donation if you like to. Only tip of advice I will give to management of this place is to have those automatic doors for handicapped and baby stroller's.

Como zoo is amazing. during the winter time, most animals stay in door which allows us to have a close look at them:zebra, giraffe, ostrich and many other cute animals. the tropical room is amazing, never seen a sloth before so i stared at one on a tree for 10 minutes and he/she didnt even move. what a cute sloth! good general design, handicapped accessible, very helpful staff... a wonderful day in Como!
