Family owned business since 1935. Serving Litchfield and surrounding areas since 1960.
With a loyal clientele spanning generations, Bobby Siddall, owner of Colonial Greenhouse in Litchfield, Connecticut, looks forward to continuing the family tradition that began almost 80 years ago.
Colonial Greenhouse was founded in 1935.
“The company was started in 1935 by a distant uncle,” Bobby said. “My family took over the business in 1961.”
Bobby has worked in the family business for as long as she can remember.
“I started early working in the family business,” Bobby said. “At age eight, I was answering the phone, doing corsage work and watering.”
She now owns and operates Colonial Greenhouse.
“I started running the business by myself in 1999, after a ten year partnership with my sister,” Bobby said.
The business has remained in its original 1935 location.
“The shop is ‘my little hole in the wall’ – a small quaint building built in 1935 for this purpose,” Bobby said. “The beams are from an old railroad track and siding and inside panels were milled locally in 1930s.”
While keeping its historic location, the flower shop has nonetheless gone through various changes over the years.
“At one point we did a lot of growing wholesale and retail, but now we are a full service flower shop with only one remaining greenhouse,” Bobby said.
Bobby runs the business herself, relying on family to help during peak times.
“I do it all myself these days,” Bobby said. “Family comes in at the holidays and busy times to help.”
Colonial Greenhouse is a full service florist specializing in custom floral arrangements and gifts for every occasion. The company serves Litchfield, Connecticut and surrounding areas including Torrington, Bantam, Goshen, Cornwall, Morris, Washington, New Preston, Warren, Bethlehem and Harwinton.
“I love to make dish and European gardens and do great fruit and gourmet baskets,” Bobby said. “I also love to do funeral tributes.”
For Bobby, quality and customer satisfaction is key.
Wedding Bouquet On Rustic Country Fence“I get fresh deliveries almost every day and 100 % guarantee my work,” Bobby said.
Bobby tailors her designs to fit the needs and wants of her customers.
“I do all styles but my customers and I seem to prefer the loose country garden style,” Bobby said.
And, she welcomes the opportunity to be creative.
“I do love a challenge though – I have done logos, animals, rainbows and more of flowers,” Bobby said. “I have even used real fish in arrangements and made a dump truck that doubled as a champagne bucket for an opening.”
After so many years in the community, Colonial Greenhouse has cultivated a loyal clientele spanning generations.
“We have a great longtime customer base, both private and commercial,” Bobby said. “We have done weddings for parents and their kids.”
The company has remained very involved in the community, and supports various charitable organizations.
“We have been an FTD member since 1961, and are a member of the Litchfield Merchant Association,” Bobby said. “We also support lots of groups from schools, to churches, scouts to American Legion functions.”
For Bobby, continuing the business that her ancestors began almost 80 years ago has been, and continues to be, very rewarding.
“I still love to come to work every day after 30 years,” Bobby said. “I love that every day is different.”
