Claquato Cemetery

This place has more hedges than the Overlook Hotel. Don't miss the Pioneer Tree, which sheltered quite a few pioneers who couldn't find a hotel back in the day.

My mother and the majority of her family are buried here. Her oldest sister was born in the farmhouse that sits next to the cemetery, where my great grandparents lived. Not sure if my great grandfather built it. I wish I could buy it. Whenever we visited we would go see the huge "Pioneer Tree". People traveling west would use it to camp under during the Oregon Trail times. Amazing history with a few historic houses and buildings, like the old church, which are really worth seeing. My Gramma had to walk miles to get to get anywhere. She would go climb Bawfaw Peak with her little brother and watch their father farming and maintaining the cemetery and eat Jelly sandwiches. The family bought one of the very first cars made . She would talk about her brother driving her to church and school dances. They had to stop every few miles to change the inner tubes in the tires because they kept popping on the rough roads. Uncle Art would sit in the car and wait for her because he was so dirty by the time they got to the dance he didn't want to go in. Life must have been extra hard, but yet so beautiful and peaceful back then. I'm glad I paid attention to her stories I love you Grammie Root

Surprised how well it's kept, it looks amazing! We enjoyed looking at the older headstones.

I visited my grandparents grave-sites and the grounds appeared well-maintained. Thank you!
