Coming from a city in which I had great food options that were all 4-5 stars, eating out here in Central Maine can be hard especially Chinese food but the China Garden is our new all time favorite stop period! The food is fresh and well prepared. She and the staff are super helpful and friendly and the restaurant is clean and bright. 5 stars for use, I'd add more if I could! This is now our date night take out pick up place too! Vegetarian options: She is a vegetarian for 32 years and proud of it! She guided us through our order and gave great suggestions. We tried a traditional plate she prepared for us and it joined the clean plate club in under 2 minutes. We have found a place to satisfy our dietary tastes! Kid-friendliness: She made my 9 year old son feel at home! She saw that he was really into the dragon surrounding the room and she stopped to explain what it meant in her culture. Dietary restrictions: if your Vegetarian or Vegan she can help just let her know
We finally decided to take the leap and check out the China Garden. Pretty cool little restaurant, very nice staff and absolutely adored the giant parade Chinese Dragon the wrapped the dining area! The food was good, although there is a little room for improvement. I had a primarily meat combo dish with some pork fried rice. The cuts and quality of the meat was fantastic! I do think they would benefit with a little longer time maybe marinating or just a bit more of the sauces added to the meat. The beef teriyaki and spare ribs were a little light on the flavor from the sauce. Similar with the pork fried rice, not quite as loaded as some places, but still good. The sugar coated fried dough was amazing! The chicken wings were also perfect! A really nice thing I noticed was that the food didn't leave you with a crazy heavy greasy feeling that many Chinese places do. My stomach was really pleased even long after the meal, which doesn't always happen, my gut can be finicky... Overall, pretty happy and I'm sure we'll be back again in the future.
Christine made us custom dishes, we just said we wanted beef and shrimp and she came back with these dishes, and chicken lo mein for the less adventurous of us
Both my husband and I love this place. The bar could be updated some, very limited drink choices, but the food is fresh and service friendly
I'm impressed. Their pork belly stew was AMAZING! It wasn't overly salty and was VERY tender. The boneless ribs were big pieces and wasn't overdrenched in sauce. The sesame chicken was DELICIOUS! The chicken wasn't overdressed or overcooked and they put just enough sauce to it that it coated each piece without being TOO much sauce. I'm usually not one for Egg Rolls or Fried Rice as I'm quite picky, and I have to say that was fantastic. The Egg Roll didn't have that greasy after taste as I've tasted in many others, and the Fried Rice was perfect. It wasn't overly dry or dry tasting. Great to sit in, great to take out and even good for delivery!
This review is for people who eat gluten free. We came to this restaurant because of a recommendation from the owner of a nearby gluten free bakery. She told us to ask specifically for the owner, Christine, who was very willing to find gluten free options and understands the precautions needed for celiac. We did as suggested, and Christine was indeed knowledgeable and gracious. She indicated she would make our food personally after washing the wok and all the utensils. She indicated that with advance notice many things could be made gluten free, but since we arrived on a Saturday dinner rush, she was more limited. She checked with us for general preferences and other allergies and then asked us to trust her to make something for us. The food was great! Christine also eats gluten free not celiac and clearly had researched all her ingredients. She also indicated everything was made by her, with minimal processed food. We will be back!
This is our favorite Chinese place by far! The prices are reasonable and the portions are big not to mention delicious.
The basics taste nothing like your typical American Chinese food. The fried rice is very bland and the crab Rangoon flavor is not right at all. I’ve tried the lo mein before, also not very good. The price is right but the flavor is just not there, overall very disappointing.
We were prepared to try something new. Got the Szechuan beef and Hunan chicken. Both supposed to be spicy. Both meals tasted the same, sauce wise. Bland, not any spice at all. The egg rolls skins were still raw underneath the crispy outside. The fried rice was flavorless as well. So disappointed.
Ordered an egg drop soup for my partner, it was green and tasted like a dirty sponge. had to throw it away because we couldn't trust it was safe to eat. I also got the boneless ribs once and one piece tasted distinctly rotten. The staff is really kind but I don't know about trusting the food.Food: 1/5
