Heard from a friend for the famous burger from Charlie Beinlich's. After a while I was in neighborhood so decided to stop by and try it out. Coming in was different than usual pubs that you go. Very old school looking place, feeling is like a cabin deep in forest in 1950's. A lot of wood, fish on walls etc.. There's no menu on tables, there's black board by the bar and there are not many options, burger/cheeseburger, roast beef & shrimp cocktail. There are no prices either. Server was food runner, bartender and server, like back in Europe. I went with double cheeseburger, if you want fries it costs extra and it comes with coleslaw as well, which I don't care for. I put lettuce and mayo, very basic, I wanted to taste meat mostly. The meat was moist, very GOOD QUALITY ground beef, not seasoned too much, but cheese and mayo helped it with taste, I was very satisfied, it is really one of the best burgers I ever had. I believe for most people single burger is enough it's 1/3 of a pound, I was really hungry and went with double. I don't understand people saying "overpriced", "mcdonalds could save you money" Sure but it's about quality of meat, so I don't agree with those comments and people sayin receipts are written on paper bla bla, I mean people just complaining about not important stuff, menus, receipts, price.. It was 40$ for 2 people, and it was worth every single penny!! This place is CASH ONLY. Huge recommendation for everyone to try Charlie's burger.
We are from out of town so after spending the morning at the botanical garden we checked Google for nearby lunch spots and this place had high marks. The food was ok but way over priced in my opinion for a burger where the bun fell apart, and where you are served fries that were frozen and not even fresh cut potatoes. It appears to be a neighborhood place and was filled to capacity. The dining area is very small and they try to fit in as many tables as possible so it's really tight. There is also an outdoor patio but it was a hot day so thought inside seating might be better. The other reason I eliminated a star is because they only accept cash.
Other places try to recreate the 1950 corner bar vibe, but they ain't nothing like the real deal. Someone asked for a slice of tomato on their sandwich and the bartender simply said, "We don't serve tomatoes." Don't mess with a classic. This time capsule is a local treasure.
It's not often I leave a low review; the food is overpriced. The menu is on the wall with no prices either. They accept cash or personal checks. I sat for recently with my family I posted a pic of the food and my bill you decide! I left 20% on top as well
We really enjoyed this place. - maybe because of our love for Wisconsin. We loved the old time ambience of fish on the walls and old time beer signs. We had the chili and burgers. Both were good. Service was very good and friendly. The restaurant is very clean. Yes, the price seemed a little high and the menu is limited but we enjoyed the experience. Will definitely return.
This is my go to spot with my dad! We got the shrimp cocktail to start my favorite around here and I ordered the bacon cheese burger with cheddar. Great service too, 10/10 every time! **note: it’s cash only but they have an ATMDine in: YesOutdoor seating: NoTakeout: YesCurbside pickup: Yes
I don’t get the fascination for Beinlich’s. I know it’s an institution but I’m not native born to the area, and I suspect that’s the reason! Burger was average, and the tables tiny! Staff was always pleasant, and efficient, so no complaints there!
I love this place. I travel a lot and always search out the best local places. This place feels like you are at a bar on lake in Wisconsin or the UP. The decor is wood paneling and huge mounted fish all around the place. The menu is strictly a no frills kind of place, but what I had was great. The shrimp cocktail has 6 shrimp, cocktail sauce and a lemon. They are are perfectly done and create a tasty bite. The signature item is their cheese burger. Once again it was nothing fancy, but had great flavor. The meat isn't over worked and doesn't have any binders. It is just pure meat and melts in your mouth. It actually taste like beef. The burger to bun ratio is perfect to ensure you taste everything. I did order my medium-rare, cooked perfectly, but I would recommend getting medium. Because the meat is so tender it was missing a little texture when cooked below medium. The staff was great and kept on bringing us beers thought the meal. If you are looking for a great burger and want to feel like your eating at your place back home, go to Charle Beinlich's!
Took my grandchildren, 6 and 5, to Charlie's last night, just like I took their father 20+ years ago. They loved the kiddie cocktails extra cherries and their sandwiches. Little one made loved the pickles. We live 20 miles away now, but think we'll be back soon.
Always great. Been going for almost 50 years...still my favorite burger in Chicago. Love sitting at the bar and yakking with the barkeeps. One of those places u have to visit to appreciate it!
