Stop the presses! A GOOD barbecue restaurant has opened in Janesville. Let there be rejoicing in the streets! Seriously. It's difficult enough in this town to find any food that isn't from a chain restaurant. Finding a meal that's both local AND really flavorful is harder still. The BBQ at Casual Joe's is this rare unicorn. Here you will find meat that speaks for itself. It is smoked, in a smoker with smoke- Unlike nearly every other BBQ place in the area, where suspicious strips of warm beef product are drowned in sauce, to be eaten by inebriated Packers fans before their drive home. The brisket is especially good. So much smokey goodness! Support this local place. Vote with your wallet. Let's show the greater southern wisconsin area that Janesville is not afraid of flavor anymore!
The food was decent but, like a lot of other people have said, the pulled pork sandwich was cold, hardly even lukewarm. The taste was good, a little fatty, but would have been way better if warmed up. Coleslaw had no flavor and the corn bread was a huge disappointment, very dry and crumbly, completely fell apart. The Korean bbq nachos were really good I will say. The corn bake was already really good, but you only get a few bites of it as a side. It took me a few minutes to order my food because one of the other guys was standing a couple feet away from the guy taking the order and was chopping meat REALLY loudly so I had to stop talking and wait for him to finish. Definitely could have been a little more professional and could have done that part in the back where the food is actually prepared.
The good: the proteins here are for the most part pretty good, the taste and smokiness are great. I had the 3 meat platter of chopped pork, chicken and brisket. The very bad: as others mentioned, the side portion size is a joke. You get 3 bites when you get a side, totally not worth it. Baked beans have almost no flavor. Mac&Cheese also, almost flavorless. The mashed potatoes, surprise!!! absolutely no flavor please at least add salt. The corn bread is more like corn crumbs mashed into what resembles bread, it instantly falls apart. I ordered a family platter for my family dinner and this whole experience is a joke. We got a huge chunk of fat included in our meal, when I say huge, I'm talking about the size of a golf ball. I would not eat here again unless they fix the quality/portions - not worth almost $30 at all.
The only bad thing about this place is that I couldn't finish the amazing food I got. The pulled pork nachos are no joke. The meat melts and the spicy bbq is so savory with great zip. I can't wait to go back and try something new next time, but I'm already satisfied for the day with today's meal. The staff were so friendly and kept conversation while quickly making the food. Delicious food, enough to fill a full appetite, and a good value to boot. Worth every penny.
Delicious food, amazing sauces, fantastic staff. The best restaurant in Janesville, hands down. I had the pulled pork with smashed potatoes and corn bread. The pork was smoky, juicy, and flavorful, the smashed potatoes were fluffy and well seasoned with a seasoning I just can't put my finger on, but superb nonetheless, and the cornbread... the cornbread was the STAR of the meal. Great size, sweet, fluffy, fresh, moist, and probably the best cornbread I've ever tasted. Definitely will be back, probably later this week!
Potato salad was the worst I ever had. Mac and cheese was not mac and cheese. Pretty much plain noodles with a little of something on them. Baked beans were not flavorful. Pulled pork was good but a little fatty.. Chicken was not bad either. Brisket was tender but again pretty fatty. Cornbread is OK but really dry. They did just open up so hopefully they can improve the sides.
Went there this afternoon, ordered the pulled pork sandwich Korean style. We ordered it to go, the food was ready within minutes. The sandwich was huge, messy, and so delicious! It was full of meat- very little fat, as I’m hugely picky, green onion, feta cheese and BBQ sauce drizzled on top. It was not drowning in sauce so, you are able to really taste the meat. Super tender...super great BBQ!
Super slow, staff seems disorganized. No idea on the food have not received it yet. Will update. Update. Arrived at 6:35pm Friday 6/18. One family ahead of us. 3 or 4 people waiting that had ordered. Ordered at 6:40pm. Took 45 minutes to receive food. 1 Mac and cheese order. Watched staff struggle basically with the layout of making up plates of food. Layout of the prep area is not efficient. Review of the food... It's average. Not good, not bad. Way too sweet. Ordered spicy and was not. Baked beans side are awful. Sweet kidney beans, not baked beans. Definitely will not repeat this place.
This has to be one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. There was one person in front of us, and it took about 45 minutes to get our take out order. Once we got home, the food turned out to be worse than the service. The ribs were so burnt that there was no edible meat. Both our orders were wrong, there was missing items, the baked beans and corn bread were terrible. We had to use the side Mac and cheese for the smash bowl because they didn't put the Mac and cheese in. The only person there was overwhelmed and not properly trained according to him. I would put zero stars if it let me. The only plus side is the employee gave us a bread pudding for the wait, which was actually decent. We couldn't be more disappointed because we really wanted to have a good BBQ place in town.
Atmoshphere and ambiance needs some work. Food was out front where ordering takes place. Pulled pork was good, but cold. Mac and cheese was not very cheesy. They were out of 6 of their side choices. They didn't bring drinks we ordered, so we had to request them again. Whitewater location was better overall. We will give them another try, but wouldn't recommend Casual Joe's at this time.
