Canadian Memorial United Church

About

We are an open-hearted, open-minded, Affirming Christian Church located in Vancouver. Our Centre for Peace offers programs in wellness & spirituality.

Story

Are you a seeker? Do you ask tough questions? Are you spiritual but not religious? Christian but not dogmatic? Open to others but sure there is more to life than materialism? Touched with awe by the beauty of the world and moved to grief over the horror and suffering? Are you straight, straight(ish),or LGBTQ and want to worship where you can feel authentic? Then come and tap into something greater than us. In the Christian tradition, God is found in relationship with one another and with the world. We practice evolutionary Christian spirituality which means we see our connection to all life. Time together in Church brings us prayerful practice, a sense of connection with the Divine and with each other, and the opportunity to be filled with Spirit. You'll find spiritual practices, an amazing variety of music to move you, a stunning worship space, programs to develop your own spiritual gifts, outreach to help those in need and community. Our worship service runs every Sunday from 10:30 am to 11:40 am.

The Memorial Chapel was planned by the firm of Twizell & Twizell. Sir George Foster, K.C., M.G., the President of the League of Nations Society in Canada, turned the first sod on July 1, 1927. The Hon. Walter C. Nichol, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, laid the corner stone on September 17, 1927 and the address was given by Major-General W.W. Foster, C.M., D.S.O. The Chapel was dedicated November 9, 1928, following which the first communion was conducted by Rev. W.G. Wilson, M.A., D.D., President of the BC Conference of the United Church of Canada.

Regular services commenced on November 11th, 1928, exactly ten years to the day after the Armistice in 1918.

Canadian Memorial was built on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Wonderful acoustics. Great repertoire and celestial singing voices all the way from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY!
Got a tour. Missed the service. Beautiful church. Nice people.
This is an open minded and forward thinking congregation. They are warm and friendly and welcoming to all. Come as you are there's no judgement. No matter your belief or scepticism...they are happy to meet you.
Great experience meditating with Sri Karunamayi
This is church like you have not experienced before probably. The music is incredible with a band as well as choir that rocks, and a minister that tells it like it is. This is truly an all-inclusive Church. You must check it out if you like gospel music and one truth are told.
The stain glass windows alone will bring you joy! Once the room erupts in song the acoustic pleasure is all yours to enjoy!
Occasionally it holds West coast Symphonic orchestra concerts, that's why I go there
Nice to see a beautiful old church still being a beautiful old church not to mention a vibrant community of love.
Canadian Memorial United is a rare church that is wholeheartedly accepting of all people -- all races, genders, ages and other classifications too often used to divide people. Come and see for yourself!
Great venue to listen to Music and be at Peace!
