Really interesting Museum dedicated to the Algona Pow Camp. About a quarter of the museum is dedicated to the World War II veterans from the county. A lot of letters, pictures and artifacts from the camp. Definitely worth the $3 it cost to get in. Couple videos are available to watch as well.
This was very worth the price admission $3.00 per person. The individual giving the opening speech really knew his history of this place. He was very informative and easy to talk to. It doesn't take very long to go thru so you may want to have something else planned nearby to go along with it.
A special little Museum, it tells the story of German POWs during World War II. Museum both the impact the prisoners had on the population, and the impact the population had on the prisoners. Several forms of Art are on exhibit that the prisoners produced. Also included is a small section on the armaments of the time rifles, sidearms and knives, Iowans who were imprisoned in Germany and the local women who served in the armed forces as well. The group that runs this Museum it's pretty passionate about the story they have to tell. That's worth listening to.
Great museum that features the German POW experience in the nation's heartland. Very nice artifacts and photos. The volunteer is very informative. I would highly recommend this museum, especially for history buff and out of town.
A really neat experience and very nice gentlemen providing information at the museum. We really enjoyed our time there and this was the first I had heard about POW's in the Midwest. We had a great tour in Iowa this day.
I arranged a bus tour to stop here and we enjoyed an informative presentation and visit. Jerry and other staff were helpful for planning purposes and knowledgeable about the POW Camp. We split the bus group into two smaller groups so one looked around at the museum while the other group shopped in the nearby stores.
Very informative. Found a photo of a vet from WW2 I believe we are related to. Never heard of him but he has the same last name as my moms maiden name and looks like my cousin. So surreal there was a camp in Algona during the war.
