Worst School in brampton. This school year was terrible. First of all this school just has a social agenda. We dont actually do work, and many of my classmates can admit to not doing a single peice of work the entire school year. Thats crazy.
Very good school in the community
This school is very bad....bus drivers are bad......teachers are bad except some ..... only 12 minutes for ebreak but 40 minutes for eating ....... please never go here
To start off, the school is in a great location. Somewhat centrally located in the Valley Creek area, allowing many of the students I knew in my time here to be able to walk or bike to school. Very conveniently adjacent to the plaza on the other side of the road, with a policy that allowed students to go out during lunch hours, many whom crossed the street to have lunch in the Dairy Queen by the plaza entrance. However, being next to major road Cottrelle meant students who lived on the other side had to cross at the sparsely placed crosswalks, where most jaywalked because of the wait time. Those who didn't care at all simply crossed in the middle of the street when it was believed that no vehicles were passing by. This is a safety hazard that was only recently addressed when a student had been hit by a car on the road. Nearby Cobblehill Park is a great place for students to hang out before or after school, though the park is off limits during lunch hours. Most of the spring or autumn months composed of "walk-and-talk" recesses, where up to 600 students are confined to the tarmac space in the yard for 40 minutes because of ice or wet grass that the rest of the available space is occupied with. The students themselves tend to exhibit quite toxic behaviour, very commonly making racist or homophobic remarks to each other. Many also seem apathetic towards their academic performance, and have no problem with cheating on tests or leaving projects unfinished. While this is something staff cannot completely control, the state of the community reflects on how much effort is put in to create a positive and open environment for students to learn and do well in further levels of education. This only brings me closer to the main point I would like to get across with this review- staff treatment of students. To be clear, nearly all of the teachers working at Calderstone seem to genuinely care about students' well-being and performance. Teaching standards at this school in the time I attended were consistently met, though some teachers may need to reevaluate their relationships with students and stay back from the clear line that indicates when being friendly with a student becomes invasive and personal. The problem lies in certain staff members who don't actively teach or have different roles in the school. These members tend to be extremely rude and condescending to students who are in their first years of attendance. This leaves a bad impression and has evoked fear within students who tried to avoid these members at any time. To be specific, many students I knew feared going to the office because of the belittling way a secretary talked to those that interacted with her. This did not only apply to students- there was an incident I personally witnessed where a parent to one of the students was confused about a topic. It seemed that she had become frustrated with the parent and spat out her explanation in a very simplified, command-like form, imitating the parent's foreign accent and unnecessarily using hand gestures to mimic the actions she was saying. I had unpleasant experiences with the secretary before, though this was the final straw that made me determine whether it was simply students being delusional or that she indeed was unprofessional and did not belong in a school setting. On another occasion, my sister came to pick me up because the second half of the school day was occupied by the spring dance, which I had chosen not to participate in. Even her witnessed the secretary giving a demeaning answer to a student's simple question about whether he had to stay for the rest of the day and told me about it in the car. Overall, my personal experiences with this school were not pleasant. If you have no other option, send your child here for the minimum requirement of them being taught by well-meaning teachers, though be prepared to hear about how they were almost run over by a car on the street, how they don't feel accepted by their fellow students, or how staff members are rude with no concern for students.
