Low key clean restaurant with tasty Ethiopian food in Madison’s Willy St. neighborhood. Menu has a few cross-African dishes including a few uncommon ones like the duck tenders - which I’ve never seen before. Consensus was they were tasty and the sauce and just a little delicious heat. Initially we were a bit put off by the delay in being seated - actually no one greeted us when we entered the restaurant but eventually we found someone to seat us. Our waiter was pleasant and helpful. Appetizers came very fast. The Lentil samosas were quite tasty with a flakey and delicate dough. For this new to Ethiopian food, many dishes are served on a thin sourdough pancake called Injera which is made from Ted grains. It is quite tasty. We ordered our family style with all food served on a giant folded Injera pancake. Pro-tip the pancake under the food soaps up the sauces and is the most delicious! Pro-tip 2 - if you are running out of pancake, your waiter can bring more. Pro-tip 3 tear off a piece of pancake and scoop up the food. Many of the foods will be thick stews easy to scoop up with Injera. We enjoyed The lamb tibs, the Kenyan coconut curry chicken and the Doro wat. Frankly everything was well prepared and tasted delicious. Sauces and flavors are strong and savory - except for the lentils which were pretty mild and a bit plain. Of note is the Injera - it is really well made - quite delicious with just the right amount of sour. Not too heavy or thick. Since Injera is the foundation of a good Ethiopian meal it has to be good. Buraka’s is great! Our Tiramisu expert found it to be a tasty dessert.
Duck tenders were very good and the samosa. The chicken peanut curry had barely any chicken, was disappointed. Left hungry unfortunately. It's okay, not bad, not great. Probably wouldn't go back. Interior is very cute and cozy. Lentil salad that came with entrees was freshing.
Delicious! Was trying to try some food that I had never had before and this place was amazing! Perfectly spicy and delicious. Injera was great! Lots of flavor in all the food.
I've been wanting to try their Friday fish fry for ages, and am so happy I did! Fresh and cooked to melt-in-the-mouth perfection, with the perfect amount of berbere spice. The sides sweet potato fries, rice and chickpeas, and cold lentil salad were a perfect complement, and the dipping sauce was great with everything! I shared a plate with my dining companion, with an added side of the sweet potato fries, and we left pleasantly full. Kind service as well, by Maron. Can't wait to try their regular menu!
Food was very good. Service is not quick, because one poor woman was serving, bartending, and hosting the whole restaurant. The family-style platter made it great for us two adults and four kids to share a meal. The Tibs Firfir with beef was spicy and rich. The Dorowot was not as spicy as expected, but very flavorful. Everything was very tasty. The Ethiopian coffee is made and served in a French press, which was a tad disappointing, but the coffee was still excellent. Vegetarian options: The vegetable peanut stew was very good, and the lentil salad that accompanied the meal was a nice addition. Kid-friendliness: It isn't overtly kid-friendly, but the server was very nice to our kids.
The BEST! Their food is incredibly delicious. I usually have the dorowot Usually we get takeout but we’ve eaten here before and interior is nicely decorated, service is prompt and friendly. Can’t recommend this place enough. Definitely bring your appetite though, it is very filling!
So glad I came here! The food was really flavorful and the service was great. We were seated and served quickly. I got the coconut chicken curry and it was amazing with the injera. First time trying Ethiopian food and I highly recommend it.
Good food but unkept. Dirty glasses and dishes left out on the bar and booths. No one in our group is really interested in returning.
Great African restaurant. Everything we ordered was not only new to us but wonderful. You enter the front door into a world of warm, inviting scents along with a very friendly greeting. Can't wait to return.
Unbelievably small potions of sauce and meat. Ordered the chicken peanut stew which contained only 4 pieces of small chicken a small amount of sauce and I was left with a mountain of white rice. Dish was $16 for basically a plate of white rice. Couldn’t taste any “peanut” because of how little sauce there was. Terrible experience
