My husband and I met with Gary to consult about our taxes. We thought we had made a mistake in the previous year. Gary spent over an hour with us. He reviewed all of our information and took his time explaining everything. His knowledge and understanding was impressive! I felt so confident and safe. Finances can be so intimidating and overwhelming. Gary made it an easy and worry-free experience.
Avoid this firm. My excellent former CPA retired and sold accounts to this firm. The first year Budd Bay did my return, I owed an eye-popping $10K to IRS. I don't know if it's true, but they e-filed it before I could ask for an explanation. The next year I casually enquired about a tax strategy my friend used and owner Gary Merz snapped "Well, have HIM prepare your taxes!" Then he tore a page out of my tax return I just paid for. Totally unprofessional outfit.
Gary has been doing our taxes for several years, and we've been very happy with the service. He and his staff have always been professional, answering our questions, and providing advice.
I would strongly encourage everyone to avoid this business. My taxes owed for the last years I’ve used this office have been the highest I have ever paid. This year it was 10k. I decided to have a second opinion and had my taxes reviewed by another firm. Not only did they leave out deductions, but had me paying taxes and penalties on an IRA that was already taxed and was never supposed to be penalized. My second CPA told me this is an elementary return that any basic tax advisor should be able to perform, yet it was foreign and entirely confusing them how to add the appropriate attachment for explaining an education distribution. After sending them materials as to how to perform there job they still stated there computer program won’t accept it. Only after demanding they return my fee and let me take my taxes elsewhere so theu can properly prepare them did I get to speak to Gary, of which it was a major inconvenience for him to take a minute to talk....he rudely said “ok I know the form you are talking about and I will do it”. Still waiting for my amendment and lacking any confidence in this office I was told I would be getting a call this afternoon, called the office at 4pm to be told it would be Monday....reminded them I was told this afternoon and I would be gone Monday which is the deadline for mailing in my tax fee. I was again, spoken to rudely and hung up on this time by Susan, the woman that apologized yesterday for Gary’s rude behavior. This office is incompetent. I have only written one other review ever, I abhor writing them, but people need to be warned. I am now taking my last 3 yrs taxes to all get reviewed.
Our previous accountant retired, & he turned us over to Budd Bay. I didn’t have a chance to shop around because it was tax time. My first impression was horrendous, I thought Gary, the owner at Budd Bay, was just having a bad day, but I soon realized that he has a real arrogant attitude with absolutely no people skills. As for tax preparation, Budd Bay would wait until the last minute of the April deadline to call me to pick up our documents, then we would have to file an extension even though we dropped off all our paperwork 2-3 months in advance! Gary... YOUR FIRED!!
If I could give a 0 rating, I would. This office lacks the ability to effectively process and file basic business taxes. After months of inaction, suddenly everything was a rush to get filed. After much back and forth with office staff, our business taxes were filed. USING THE INCORRECT EIN number! When I asked why our taxes had not been filed timely, I was told that they needed to be signed. At no point did we receive notice that our business taxes were ready and needed signatures. Almost three weeks past the deadline, our taxes are filed. After reviewing the documents provided to us, it was discovered both our Q1 and Q2 taxes had been filed using the incorrect EIN number. I have attempted to contact the owner and CPA, Gary Merz, to correct this matter several times with no response. Now our taxes are late and penalties assessed due to the incompetence of this firm. At this point, we have had no choice but to have our attorney involved. Stay away from Budd Bay CPA.
I have never been treated so poorly by a business. Tom Ott would be so disappointed in how his clients were now being treated by this group of people that took over his business after his retirement. I called to asked some questions about discrepancies on my tax return and was told he didn’t have time to explain it to me and when I asked how I was supposed to know if it’s correct he hung up on me. They cashed my check before they even started the work on my return.$300. Since we live out of state I asked if they would call us or email us on where we stood after the preparing was done and was told “we will get it in the mail”. We called several times with questions and never received a call prior to this hang up call. The woman that stated she prepared our taxes even said she never received any phone calls from us yet there was a message note from one of them to the tax preparer “Gary Metz” asking the questions we had and requesting we be called. Which we weren’t! I called another tax place in the area and was told they were receiving many of Toms old customers saying how unhappy they were with Budd Bay CPA. She stated she didn’t feel they would be in business for much longer the way they were doing business.
I went in this office to see Mr Merz because I received a notification that I owed money to a certain agency. I’d never been contacted or been in this sort of situation; his staff was very helpful with getting me into the office almost immediately. My consult was complimentary and that was a mind ease in itself as I already had money issues on my mind. He listened very well to my concerns and then explained what I needed to do next. I felt at ease when I left his office. I’d recommend this office for sure
Gary Merz has been doing our business and personal taxes for a few years now. He is, in my opinion, very professional. Gary is knowledgeable and understanding and always covers any questions we have. I highly recommend Budd Bay CPA.
They said they would do my taxes then no then yes then no and more money. This be straight up.
