Brockville

Story

The Brockville railway station in Brockville, Ontario, Canada is served by Via Rail trains running from Toronto to Ottawa and Montreal. It is a staffed railway station, with ticket sales, outdoor parking, telephones, washrooms, and wheelchair access to the platform and trains.Refurbishment plansVia Rail announced in November 2009 that it would replace the historic 1872 Brockville station with a new $7-million facility. This initial proposal was scaled back; on November 10, 2010, Via Rail unveiled a second proposed design for a new station building. That 2,400sqft building was to cost $4.5 million CDN and would have been wheelchair accessible, with space to accommodate expanded track lines.Once the proposed development was to have been completed, the old railway station building was planned to be demolished — a move which met with local opposition. As passenger volumes remain low, Via returned to the drawing board and proposed a million-dollar renovation of the existing station with a new roof, exterior brick, lighting, doors and windows. An automatic door and accessibility improvements would be added for people with disabilities; a building adjacent to the station would be demolished and replaced with a passenger shelter. According to Brockville mayor David Henderson, “It’s clearly something that set off some alarm bells in the local community, because we do have a very historical aspect to this old city. What was good is that Via Rail, and the people at Via Rail, they responded.” The renovations were completed in July 2015.

This is more of a homeless warming shelter than a train station. I've brought my mother there twice for early morning trains. The first time, there was no employee working and there were 3-4 homeless people in there sleeping or just hanging around. They drag their bikes and belongings in there and just spend the night. My mother was afraid to use the washroom. I waited with her. No employee ever came.nnThe next time I brought my mother to catch the morning train, the door was locked and some homeless people were inside, just watching me trying to open the door. So I stood with my mom outside in the winter morning and waited for her train.nnIf Via wants to build homeless shelters, that's a great idea. They should! But call it a shelter then, so passengers don't confuse it with a train station.nnI called to suggest a change but of course there is no number for the Brockville station, and calling the general number lead to me being on hold for long enough that I just gave up.
When our train arrived there was only one and final warning to board the train. There were no employees present to direct people and the train had it’s door closed. We mindlessly walked around near the train until finally an employee from the station came out and helped clarify how we would board. It felt very rushed and unplanned, even though our train was roughly on time.
Nice small town. People are very friendly and it has a train station where you can take the train from there to Montreal, Ottawa, or Toronto.
Brockville is a nice small city, a town really. Wonderful historic house. Lovely walking area alongside the St. Lawrence River. The city has plenty of potential!
This station connects Brockville to the entire Quebec City-Windsor corridor + the rest of the VIA rail network. It is a privilege to have a VIA station in Brockville. Many cities in Canada do not have one, including Calgary.
