Astounding delicious French inspired classic food in a modern yet historic part of Missoula! The atmosphere and decor is a modern yet sophisticated take on the dining cars from trains of yesteryear mixed with a rustic French feel. The staff members are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the French inspired classic food and wine pairings that are offered. Definitely recommend a reservation as the restaurant fills up quickly. Dress either in casual or fancy attire depending on how you want enjoy your evening!
First time here and it was pretty good! Boxcar has a beautiful interior, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a weekly rotating menu. Easy to make reservations online and located in a new development near downtown Missoula. Super delicious food, really wish they had mocktails for those who don't drink beer/wine! We ordered the warm raclette, steelhead fish, and shrimp dishes. Seating and table were comfortable and we were able to have a fun date night! My only "complaint" would be that the music did not match the interior vibe, but it's not that big of a deal! We will definitely try Boxcar again!
There’s no way that a place for fine food and chill atmosphere exists in Missoula, think again. A knowledgeable and sincere staff boasts a fantastic wild caught and seasonable menu with a great selection of wine pairings and a good imported beer. Each member of the staff knew their menu, drinks and the history behind the establishment. We came out of curiosity and will make the drive from the Bitterroot at least once a month. This was unforgettable.
I am amazed. Boxcar is stationed in a modern cookie cutter development that recently popped up in Missoula, and I wasn’t expecting to find the whimsical charm it contains behind its doors. Have you ever had rillettes? I hadn’t until last night at Boxcar. I didn’t know that a simple meat spread could be so delectable. What a treat - I also had the asparagus bisque and the herbed fries with fantastic like, truly stunning sun dried tomato aioli. The combination of unique menu items and reasonable prices for the entire experience makes Boxcar my new favorite spot in town. And of course I have to add, the service is wonderful. They gladly allowed me to finish my wine outside on the front patio after we had already paid the bill. A few thoughts: the rillettes could have done better on a crostini instead of crackers, which broke apart more often than I would have liked. Also, the asparagus bisque should have a larger serving as a meal option! It was so good I would have been happy with just that for dinner, but the serving size was quite small even for an appetizer. Overall, I’m very impressed - clearly the team behind Boxcar cares a lot about not only quality food, but also about creating an imaginative and special experience.
This is an excellent restaurant and a top contender for best in town. It is not a very big space though so reservations are advised as this place is popular. The menu is very upscale but not very pricey. The interior has a lot of dark green and is faintly lit but in a nice way. I really like the use of real flower buds on the tables. They have a cheese menu here where they have about 5 fancy cheeses for $4 an oz served with crackers, dried fruit, and these citrusy nuts. I had an oz of Saint Angel cheese, sardine rilletsfancy fish dip/spread, sirloin, and croissant bread pudding. Everything was phenomenal, the service was great and I enjoyed the heavy glasses and quality of the flatware here.
We had a wonderful dinner. Our waitress was both very beautiful and incredibly helpful with her wine suggestions that complimented our entrees. We started with olives, cheeses and escargot. The wine and beer menu was robust with tasty affordable options as well as I won the lottery want to splurge choices. I had the filet. It was tender and cooked perfectly. I wasnt a fan of the sauce it tasted like bbq. The flavor of the meat was excellent. The potatoes and beans were also delicious. My son haf the New York strip. It also was tender and seasoned well. He loved the cognac cream sauce. His friend had the very tender Duck confit and whitebean mash. The table service was very nice Waterford crystal style glasses, china plates and silver was "substantial". You knew you had a solid fork and knife. The French atmosphere was charming. I have one request. It would be great if they added some more inconspicuous sound absorbing materials. I had a difficult time hearing and understanding conversation at our table due to the accoustics of the room. Dress up and enjoy or go comfortable. We will definitely eat here again.
Love the atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and made great recommendations. I don't think I would eat the escargot again but the foie gras was amazing and I think I could eat it often. Highly recommend. I also did the beef tenderloin and loved it!!! If you are a foodie definitely check this place out!!Food: 4/5
My hubby took me to Boxcar Bistro for my birthday and it was delightful. The bistro itself was warm and romantic. I really enjoyed the quiet atmosphere. I had the burger and creme brulee. Both were delightful. The burger was buttery and delicious and the creme brulee was smooth and the strawberries they topped it with were the best strawberries I've had so late in the year.
Great service and atmosphere but so so food. Warm baguette tasted stale. Duck confit was quite good, 10/10 for that! Steak was a big portion but very over cooked, to the point where it was pretty chewy.
The service was so amazing I hugged the waiter when I left. I had the steak frites and I honestly think it was the best steak I have ever had. Cooked exactly how I requested. The whole experience is not one I will soon forget.
