If you ask any Montreal-born person to name three local fashion designers, chances are they will name Denis Gagnon. The fashion designer has been working in the field for decades, and he's one of the best and the most recognized for his work. Expect a lot of black, a lot of unique details, and a style of its own, in-between elegant and avant-garde. In his beautiful two-stories boutique in Old Montréal, you'll be able to find the designer's current collection, accessories from other local brands, and the best part - the designer himself. His atelier is located behing the boutique, and here's there evey day with his seamstress to create pieces for the store. When you buy a Denis Gagnon piece, you are guaranteed to buy something that was handmade by the designer himself. When you are aware of that, let me tell you that you realize how (very!) affordable his clothes are. Since he's there every day, you can get any piece altered to your desire. The alterations' cost vary depending on much work it implies, but I've seen many that were as cheap as $5. The only thing that can bother: the sizes. Sizes run small there. If you're usually a Medium, try on a Large. The designer is fully aware of the situation, so whenever a piece of clothing doesn't fit or comes in your size, he can custom make it for you, according to your measurements. Sometimes for the same price, sometimes for a little extra. If you're in Old Montreal, make sure to stop by the store. You really won't regret it!
